The budget a gatherer is working with

Each character can spend up to 16 Legacy Points at launch, and that single budget covers all three trees: Professions, Adventure and Resourcefulness. Points are shared across your account, but every character spends them separately, so a dedicated gatherer and your main can hold completely different builds.

Gathering itself doesn't earn Tradeskill points. Those challenges cover only non-gathering primary professions at 150, 225 and 300 skill, so a character with two gathering professions draws on points earned from leveling, dungeons, raids, PvP, Adventure and your other characters.

One budget, two pulls: more Scarce materials, or a faster and safer route.

Perks a gathering route can use

Blizzard's Legacy article says Bountiful Harvest finds additional Scarce resources when mining, herbing or skinning; the Deep Dive recap describes it more loosely as increasing the materials gathered. Neither says which materials count as Scarce or how much each rank adds. The rest of the table is about getting to nodes and recovering between them.

Effects as Blizzard describes them. Rank counts, per-rank values and in-tree gates are not in Blizzard's published text.

Three ways to shape the build

There's no numbered build here, because Blizzard hasn't published the rank counts or in-tree gates a legal one depends on. What you can decide now is the shape.

  1. Yield first: if gathering is why the character logs in, Bountiful Harvest is the anchor. Fill the rest from whichever travel or recovery perks your route really uses.
  2. A main that gathers on the side: if the character also levels, raids or does PvP, those perks compete for the same 16 points, and Bountiful Harvest means giving something up.
  3. A dedicated gathering alt: because each character spends independently, one character can carry the Professions perks while your main keeps its combat and convenience picks.

What players are pushing back on

The third pattern is the one a player forum thread says the system nudges people toward: gather on an alt and spend the main's points elsewhere. The poster suggests separate point pools per tree or removing the cap, and singles out Frequent Flier as hard to fit in alongside stronger options. Those are suggestions; Blizzard hasn't announced a change.

Before committing, open the tree in your own client and count what each perk costs to reach. Keep respec costs in mind, too: the 8 October beta set the cheapest Legacy respec at 1 silver, dropping one step per hour, for the beta only.

Still to come

Not yet settled by our sources or tested in game:

  • Bountiful Harvest's per-rank yield and exactly which gathered materials count as Scarce.
  • Rank counts, Legacy Point costs and in-tree gates for the perks listed above.
  • The launch cost of a Legacy respec.
