What changed for skinning in WoW: Forever

Skinning was briefly group-wide. For about two weeks of the WoW: Forever beta, every skinner in a party could skin the same creature, once per member, before it disappeared. On 1 October 2026, Blizzard's official beta development notes confirmed it was a bug and reverted the behavior: a corpse now despawns after a single skin, the same as WoW Classic.

Wowhead's reporting on the build matches the forum post. The outlet notes that for roughly two weeks mobs could be skinned once per group member, and that the latest build returned skinning to one skinner per mob. Expect this to be the launch behavior on 4 November 2026 unless Blizzard changes course again.

Players had mixed feelings about the group-wide window while it lasted. On r/classicwow, posters pointed out it let friends level skinning together without fighting over loot rights, but also worried that all-skinner groups would flood the leather market. Blizzard has not said whether a middle ground, such as group skinning only inside dungeons, is still being considered, so treat the current one-skinner rule as the one to plan around for now.

New skinning knives and a starting bag

Keen Skinning Knife is a new reward from Unwelcome Guests, a level 18 Horde quest in The Barrens. Wowhead lists it as an uncommon dagger, item level 19, and it works as your skinning tool so you do not need to carry a separate blade. Engineering's Gnomish Army Knife, unlocked at skill 250, counts as every profession tool at once, skinning included, which is handy if your bags are already tight.

You also do not have to wield a knife to skin. Keeping one anywhere in your bags is enough, same as Classic. Two enchants raise your skill directly: Enchant Gloves - Skinning adds 5 skill and needs Enchanting 200, while a new Advanced Skinning version adds 10 skill at Enchanting 250.

The starting bag is the Apprentice's Skinning Satchel, a 4-slot leatherworking bag new to Forever. On the official forums, one beta player reported a 6-slot upgrade from a quest reward. That is a player report rather than a confirmed source, so treat the exact quest and skill requirement as unverified until Blizzard or a database confirms it.

Pristine leather and the Legacy skinning bonus

Pristine Leather, Pristine Hide and Pristine Scale are new Scarce materials you gather while skinning. Wowhead marks Pristine Leather as new to Forever, and community guides place it as a rare bonus drop from beasts you would be skinning anyway, not a separate node or route. It feeds more than a hundred new recipes across Leatherworking, Tailoring and Blacksmithing, so it is worth bagging separately from ordinary leather.

The Legacy System adds a direct skinning bonus. Three of its professions talents give skinning a boost: Working Overtime raises your chance to gain a skill-up from any tradeskill, Dedicated Study nudges up your lowest tradeskill once you have points to spend, and Bountiful Harvest raises the amount of Scarce material you gather from Mining, Herbalism and Skinning by 20 to 100 percent across its ranks. That last one is the clearest lever for stockpiling Pristine leather before launch.

Skinning also feeds the new Tanning crafting window and the Camping system. Camp Chair, Field Guide and Trapper's Workbench are camp fixtures built from leather, each granting a small critical strike bonus, and the Field Guide additionally lets you read it to gain Track Beasts.

How do you level skinning in WoW: Forever?

Skinning still tops out at skill 300 and tracks the familiar four Classic ranks, each unlocked at a trainer breakpoint.

Both Alliance and Horde have starting-zone trainers, plus two on Zephras Isle, so you rarely need to go far for your next rank. Skin while you quest rather than making dedicated trips. You need to kill and loot a creature before its corpse can be skinned, and the corpse disappears the moment someone skins it.

Wowdee's profession planning will watch your skinning skill against these trainer breakpoints and keep a running count of the Pristine Leather, Pristine Hide and Pristine Scale you still need for your next craft, so stockpiling scarce leather before launch is not guesswork.

  1. Apprentice (1-75): train at any trainer for a few copper, skin beasts up to roughly level 17.
  2. Journeyman (75-150): return to a trainer once you hit 50 skill, skin beasts up to about level 30.
  3. Expert (150-225): train again at 125 skill, skin beasts up to about level 45.
  4. Artisan (225-300): train at 200 skill for a few gold, skin beasts up to level 60.

Still to come

Not yet settled by our sources or tested in game:

  • Whether the brief group-wide skinning behavior returns in a limited form (e.g. dungeons only) before launch.
  • The exact quest and skill threshold for the reported 6-slot skinning bag upgrade.
  • Confirmed Forever beast-level-to-leather-tier table (current guides still cite unconfirmed Classic levels).
  • Where Pristine Hide and Pristine Scale drop most reliably, beyond the single-report leads seen so far.
  • The full Tanning recipe list beyond the three known camp fixtures.
