One line in the Deep Dive

Everything public about X'caliboar fits in one sentence of Blizzard's Deep Dive recap: new effects tie item choices to specific environments, such as Woodlands, Mountains or Deserts, “and to specific creature types, including examples like X'caliboar.” The recap doesn't say what kind of item it is, which creature type it favours, how large the effect is or where it comes from.

The name invites guesses, so it's worth being plain about the gap. Blizzard's text doesn't say X'caliboar targets undead or any other particular type, and it doesn't confirm a sword. Treat any guide that names a drop location or a damage bonus as unverified until it shows a dated source.

Hand-inked illustration of a sword whose gold rune marks light up as it reaches a skeleton training dummy, a plain wooden dummy beside it, above the words Holy damage against Undead.
The skeleton and the Holy-against-Undead label are only an example; Blizzard hasn't said which creature type X'caliboar favours.

Creature bonuses are a pattern in Forever

The same recap shows creature types mattering elsewhere. The Dwarf racial Big Game Hunter increases damage against Beasts, and Paladins stay especially strong against Undead and Demons through Exorcism, Holy Wrath and Turn Undead. Gear that rewards fighting the right enemy fits that design, and it makes knowing what a zone or dungeon is full of part of choosing your equipment.

Weighing it against a normal upgrade

Until real numbers exist, use the same test you'd apply to any conditional bonus:

  1. Compare the item's base stats with your current gear as if the creature bonus didn't exist. That is what you get against everything else.
  2. Estimate how much of your next stretch, whether a questing zone or a dungeon, is the creature type the item names.
  3. Keep it as a swap only if the bonus covers enough of those fights to outweigh whatever the base stats give up.

Still to come

Not yet settled by our sources or tested in game:

  • X'caliboar's item type, slot and level requirement.
  • Which creature type its effect targets, and the size of the bonus.
  • Where X'caliboar comes from.
  • Whether its bonus stacks with racial or class strengths against the same creature type.
