Hit and crit are each one stat now
Spell, melee, and ranged hit are now one Hit stat. Spell, melee, and ranged critical strike are now one Crit stat too. Blizzard confirmed the merge at the 13 September deep dive.
The merge helps hybrid specs the most. Retribution Paladins and Enhancement Shamans get more value out of a single piece of gear, because it no longer has to pick which hit type to boost. Warriors, Hunters, and Rogues benefit as well: the same Hit stat now makes Taunts, Poisons, and Traps land more reliably, instead of those abilities riding on a separate, unlisted miss chance.

What happened to weapon skill?
Weapon skill still works the way it always has. It still lowers your chance to be dodged, parried, or blocked, and still trims glancing blows. What changed is how much of it gear grants: items with weapon skill now offer less of it per piece, so a weapon-skill ring or trinket is no longer an automatic best-in-slot pick the way it was in Classic.
A separate Expertise stat lowers the chance your attacks are dodged or parried. Beta known issues notes reference a "Pet Expertise" display for Hunter and Warlock pets, confirming the stat exists under that name. Method.gg's breakdown of the deep dive compares it to Burning Crusade's Expertise.
One deep dive example, Edgemaster's Handguards, carried both stats at once: a weapon-skill bonus to Axes, Daggers, and Swords, plus a separate 1 percent reduction to being dodged or parried. Treat Expertise as a second, smaller lever next to weapon skill, not a replacement for it; Blizzard's own notes say weapon skill "still works as it always has."
Caster weapons and healing gear changed too
Caster-oriented weapons now grant spell damage and healing, the way weapon upgrades have always given Warriors, Rogues, and Hunters a reason to want them. Before Forever, a caster's weapon barely mattered beyond its stats. Now it does.
Items with bonus healing also carry bonus damage, worth one third as much. One example shown at the deep dive: the Hide of the Wild cloak adds up to 42 bonus healing and 14 bonus damage. That gives healers something to hit with while questing solo, instead of standing around between heals.
Dungeon, quest, and rare drops got an overhaul
Blizzard says it re-examined every dungeon drop in the game. Unique dungeon boss items are now blue quality, and set bonuses were improved to feel more worth chasing. Hundreds of new drops were added across dungeons, and world-drop epics and rare-creature loot both got a pass to cut the items nobody wanted.
Quest rewards grew too. Mor'ladim's quest chain in Duskwood still hands Alliance players a two-handed sword, but now it also offers the Ladimore Heirloom Ring for spellcasters. Hemet Nesingwary's Stranglethorn Vale quests add a new option, the Master Hunter's Spellsword. Neither item's exact stats are public yet.
Situational trinkets and biome gear
Trinkets are moving toward situational effects instead of flat stat sticks. Blizzard's own example is the Worgenbane Talisman, a level 21 trinket that stuns a target Worgen for 4 seconds on a 5 minute cooldown. Other new effects only trigger in specific terrain, such as Woodlands, Mountains, Deserts, cities, or caverns, or against specific creature types. Blizzard's own example there is X'caliboar, a two-hand sword whose bonus Holy damage triples against Undead rather than sitting in a flat stat line.
Beta players on Reddit are already asking what this means for your bags. A biome trinket, a beast-slaying weapon, and a dragonkin ring can each be the right pick for a different pull, and one player breakdown points out that remembering which piece is equipped before each fight becomes its own chore.
The Wowdee add-on + app will compare two pieces of gear for the activity you are actually doing, including a bonus that only applies in one biome or against one creature type, so you know which piece to carry before you make the swap.
Still to come
Not yet settled by our sources or tested in game:
- Exact stats for the Ladimore Heirloom Ring and the Master Hunter's Spellsword.
- The complete list of biome and creature-type bonuses beyond Woodlands, Mountains, Deserts, cities, caverns, and X'caliboar.
- Whether Expertise has a published cap, since Blizzard has not stated one.
