Which totem drops where

Storm, Earth, and Fire is the second step of the level 30 Shaman weapon chain. Two community guides built from the beta client, wowforever.be and Wow4everNews, agree on what it asks for: five Twisted Water, five Twisted Earth, five Twisted Fire and five Twisted Air Totems, twenty in all, with each type tied to its own zone. Players in a 4 October beta forum thread were grinding the same four zones.

Each zone gives one type, so you cannot finish the quest in a single area. Plan it as four separate trips, or fold each zone into your leveling when you pass through.

Zones and original targets come from Wow4everNews; the last column is Blizzard's 8 October notes. Wow4everNews files Ongeku and Murdaloc under these rows, but Blizzard names them without saying where they are.

What the 8 October build changed

Before that build, the problem was waiting more than difficulty. Players in the 4 October thread described 30 or more people sharing one spawn in Desolace, one duo reported killing around 40 troggs in the Badlands for a single totem, and another player put their Desolace time at roughly seven hours for one totem. Blizzard's 8 October notes respond directly: the quest creatures respawn faster, they drop their totems more often, and four new sources join the list.

The Fire totem got the biggest change. Dustbelcher ogres anywhere in the Badlands can now drop it, and larger encampments such as Dustbelch Grotto respawn faster. Smaller ogre camps keep their old respawn, so if you farm ogres for Fire totems, the big camps are where the faster respawn applies.

Neither Blizzard nor the guides publish a drop rate. Read the hour counts in older complaints as a description of the build before these changes, not a forecast for yours.

Getting to this step, by faction

The chain opens at level 30, after Call of Air, the Shaman air totem quest. Next comes Elemental Aid, which asks for the Tattered Note from Charlga Razorflank, the final boss of Razorfen Kraul. Wowforever.be lists Elemental Aid as a level 33 quest. Storm, Earth, and Fire follows it.

Alliance Shaman have the clearer path. In what Wow4everNews calls its verified Alliance route, Eldrun Stormbreaker in Ironforge sends you to Veyric Thunderhame in the northern Arathi Highlands, around 60, 28, and Veyric takes both the note and the twenty totems. On the Horde side, the same guide says Call of Air points to Prate Cloudseer in Thousand Needles. It does not present the later Horde steps as verified, because the guides disagree, so follow the giver and turn-in shown in your own quest log.

The pickup level is not the difficulty level. One player in the thread called this line much harder than the Warrior's Whirlwind weapon quests, and the ritual after it includes level 40 enemies. The same thread's reports came from a duo in the Badlands and from one player who worked the other zones in groups of three to five.

  1. Finish Call of Air at level 30 and accept Elemental Aid.
  2. Kill Charlga Razorflank in Razorfen Kraul for the Tattered Note and hand it in.
  3. Accept Storm, Earth, and Fire and collect five of each Twisted Totem across the four zones.
  4. Hand in all twenty to move on to Heed My Call, the ritual fight.

Still to come

Not yet settled by our sources or tested in game:

  • Where in the Swamp of Sorrows and the Badlands to find Ongeku and Murdaloc; Wow4everNews files them under those zones, and Blizzard's notes name them as new totem sources without a location.
  • The complete Horde route after Call of Air, including who accepts Elemental Aid and the totems.
  • Drop rates for each totem type after the 8 October increase.
  • Whether each grouped Shaman gets their own totem drops; the Eye of the Tempest is the only item in this chain Blizzard has called multi-drop.
