What realmless means in WoW: Forever

WoW: Forever drops the familiar realm-selection screen. Blizzard confirmed this on 21 September 2026: you no longer pick a named server before you create a character.

Instead, you choose a ruleset. Each ruleset works as one large shared ecosystem rather than a single traditional realm, so you land among far more players who want to play the same way you do.

Blizzard says the point is to cut the pressure of guessing the right launch realm without turning Azeroth into a place that feels anonymous. The world should still feel active and lived in as you level and quest inside your chosen ruleset.

No realm list anymore: Forever asks you to choose one road, not one server.

The four rulesets: Normal, PvP, Roleplaying, Hardcore

Four rulesets are planned. Normal is the baseline experience: exploration, questing, and cooperation, with open-world PvP only when you choose to engage in it. PvP raises the stakes in contested territory, with more danger and conflict built in. Roleplaying is for players who want to lean into Azeroth's fantasy and find like-minded adventurers.

Hardcore is the fourth ruleset, for players who want every decision to carry lasting consequences on death. Blizzard confirmed Hardcore is coming but not at launch. Its 12 September panel recap lists Hardcore among the post-launch roadmap goals, with no firm date yet.

How do you play with friends in WoW: Forever?

To group, run a dungeon, or raid together, you and your friends need the same ruleset and the same faction. Blizzard has confirmed cross-ruleset grouping does not work: characters in different rulesets simply cannot party up for those activities.

Battlegrounds are looser. They can mix players from different rulesets, except Hardcore, which stays in its own pool there too. Horde and Alliance still cannot group together in any ruleset, so faction choice matters as much as ruleset choice.

One PvP-only restriction to plan around: once your account creates an Alliance character on the PvP ruleset, you cannot create a Horde character there, and vice versa. Normal, Roleplaying, and Hardcore allow both factions on the same account. Agree with your group on a ruleset and faction before launch, since there is no simple fix for a mismatch later.

Ruleset transfers and what carries over

You cannot freely switch rulesets on an existing character. Playing a different ruleset means starting a new character there, confirmed in Blizzard's 21 September post on the official site.

Collections and Legacy Points are account-wide across rulesets, with one exception: Hardcore. Progress and rewards earned in Hardcore can carry out to your other rulesets, but progress from other rulesets never flows into Hardcore. If a Hardcore character dies, it can transfer out to another ruleset, including PvP. Blizzard has not said whether that move costs anything or how long it takes.

Realmless regions and what's still unknown

One confirmed account-wide option: a Preferred Online Language setting under Options, then Languages and Social, groups you with other players who share your chosen language. It applies to every character on the account and has a 24-hour cooldown before you can change it again.

Blizzard's ruleset post does not say whether existing regions, such as North America and Europe, still run as separate pools underneath each ruleset, or merge players together. It also does not say whether the Roleplaying ruleset enforces PvE-only combat or allows open PvP the way some Classic RP-PvP realms did. Treat both as open questions until Blizzard or the beta says more.

Picking a ruleset is close to a one-time, group decision, and there is no realm list to compare notes on. The Wowdee add-on + app will hold your group's ruleset, faction, and region choice in one shared checklist, so everyone creates a first character in the same place.

Still to come

Not yet settled by our sources or tested in game:

  • Whether North America, Europe, and other existing WoW regions remain separate pools under each ruleset, or merge
  • Whether the Roleplaying ruleset enforces PvE-only combat or allows open PvP like some Classic RP-PvP realms
  • Cost and wait time for a Hardcore character's post-death transfer to another ruleset
  • Exact date Hardcore joins the ruleset lineup within the post-launch roadmap
