When Hardcore opens
Hardcore is not part of the 4 November 2026 launch. WoW: Forever opens with three rulesets, Normal, PvP, and Roleplaying, each running as one large population for your region rather than a traditional realm. Hardcore is confirmed as a fourth ruleset that Blizzard adds afterward, placed on the roadmap after the 9 December raids (Barrow Deeps, Hyjal Summit, and Onyxia's Lair). Blizzard has not announced an exact date for it.
A roadmap graphic shown at the reveal puts Hardcore in a Winter 2026 window, and Blizzard has not said more than that. Once it opens, Hardcore runs as its own enclosed ecosystem: you cannot group, run a dungeon, or raid across rulesets. Horde and Alliance also stay separate on Hardcore, the same as on every other ruleset.

What happens when you die in Hardcore?
Death ends a Hardcore run, but not the character. Blizzard is carrying over the exit Classic Hardcore already offered. A character that dies can transfer to another ruleset: Normal, PvP, or Roleplaying. That transfer only runs one way.
You cannot move a character into Hardcore from anywhere else, and a living Hardcore character cannot switch rulesets early to dodge the risk: every ruleset change outside that one death transfer means starting a new character. Blizzard has not said whether the transfer out of Hardcore is mandatory, or exactly what a transferred character keeps when it moves.
Legacy and collections flow out, not in
WoW: Forever's Legacy system tracks your progress with Legacy Points, earned by completing Legacy Challenges and spent in Legacy Trees for perks like faster rested experience or cheaper vendor prices. Collections and Legacy Points are normally account-wide across every ruleset. Hardcore is the one exception: a Legacy Challenge or collection item you earn in Hardcore is granted on your other rulesets too, but nothing you unlocked in Normal, PvP, or Roleplaying shows up inside Hardcore.
The Player versus Player category is worth 12 of the system's 65 Legacy Points, and those challenges cannot be completed inside Hardcore's enclosed ecosystem. To cover that gap, Blizzard confirmed 12 Hardcore-specific Legacy Challenges will launch alongside the ruleset, standing in for the 12 PvP points a Hardcore-only player could otherwise never earn. Their names and requirements have not been revealed yet.
Getting ready while Hardcore is closed
A few details are still open: the exact day inside the Winter 2026 window, the 12 Hardcore-specific Legacy Challenges, and what else besides death might let a character leave. Until Blizzard answers those, the best prep is practice. Leveling a character on Normal, PvP, or Roleplaying first teaches you the 9 new dungeons and the reworked classes before you risk a Hardcore run with one life, and its Legacy Points will carry to your other non-Hardcore characters too, just not into Hardcore itself.
The Wowdee add-on + app will keep a Hardcore plan separate from your account plan, so a perk or route you set up for Normal, PvP, or Roleplaying never gets mixed into the one-life character you start the day Hardcore opens.
