How to unlock Mage Study and Research

Comprehension covers two separate unlocks, not one. The first is Comprehend Scroll, the spell that deciphers an untranslated scroll. Any Mage trainer teaches it from level 6, and it is Mage-only. The second is Research, and no trainer grants it: it comes from the Library Book turn-in quest line that every class can do, Mage or not.

Hand a Library Book to Garion Wendell in Stormwind's Mage Quarter for the Alliance, or to Owen Thadd in Undercity's Magic Quarter for the Horde. On a Mage, your first turn-in can grant Research, which adds a Comprehension tab to your professions window holding the Study recipe. A build 1.60.1.70205 guide reports Research unlocking after that first turn-in, though Blizzard has not confirmed a fixed count.

  1. Pick up a Library Book from its spot in the world.
  2. Carry it to your faction's librarian: Garion Wendell in Stormwind, or Owen Thadd in Undercity.
  3. Turn it in. On a Mage, this quest can also grant Research.
  4. Open your professions window and look for the new Comprehension tab holding the Study recipe.

What Study and the Comprehension tab do

Study only works while you are standing in a library: Stormwind's Wizard's Sanctum in the Mage Quarter, or the inner ring of Undercity's Magic Quarter. It costs 1 Light Feather, takes a 6-second cast, and goes on a 1-hour cooldown. Casting it turns that feather into a Bundle of Scrolls.

A guide tracking build 1.60.1.70205 (wowhandbook.com, 5 October 2026) reports a Bundle has held Scroll of Minor Evocation, Scroll of Imbue Lesser Flame, Scroll of Imbue Chillknife, Scroll of Rat Familiar, and Scroll of Comprehension. The same guide is careful to say a bundle has been seen to hold those scrolls, not that the list is final.

Names still vary across sources, but the pieces fit together rather than contradict. Blizzard calls the library-granted ability "Research" in its known issues text; EU forum players call it "Study." Research is the unlock, and Study is the recipe inside it that makes the Bundle of Scrolls. Comprehend Scroll is a separate, trainer-taught ability for deciphering scrolls found in the world, described by Wowhead's spell data as deciphering an untranslated scroll.

The 1 October beta notes gave every comprehension scroll another balance pass: none of them can be cast while moving anymore. Stop walking before you read one, or the cast fails.

Why Research can lock you out

Blizzard's 1 October known issues update added "Mages who learn Research can be prevented from accessing it," and the next build, 1.60.1.70205 on 3 October, changed no Mage talents or abilities, so nothing points to a fix yet. On the EU forums, Mages describe Study never showing up in the spellbook, then disappearing from the action bar entirely after a log-out, with no way to relearn it.

One player in that thread guesses the ability was pulled on purpose. Blizzard's notes do not say that. The only official word is that this is a known issue, not a design choice, so treat Study as unreliable until a later build marks it fixed.

A Library Book turn-in you may not remember, feeding a Comprehension window that can vanish on its own, is easy to lose track of while leveling. The Wowdee add-on + app will track which library books your Mage has turned in toward Research and flag the moment Blizzard marks the access bug fixed.

Still to come

Not yet settled by our sources or tested in game:

  • The complete list of scrolls a Bundle of Scrolls can produce, beyond the five a build 1.60.1.70205 guide has reported so far.
  • Whether Research always unlocks after your first Library Book, or needs more, since Blizzard has not confirmed a count.
  • A fix date for the Research access bug.
