Fire's Hot Streak is now Heating Up
On 1 October 2026, Blizzard renamed Hot Streak to Heating Up, saying the effect no longer depends on an actual "streak" to work. It is one of the clearer Mage changes in Forever so far: non-periodic crits from Fireball, Frostfire Bolt, Fire Blast, or Scorch grant a stack that cuts your next Pyroblast cast time by 25%, up to 3 stacks, inside a 20-second window.
Combustion moved back to 3 charges that same day, down from the 4 it ran at earlier in the beta. The notes also fixed Improved Scorch so its Fire Vulnerability debuff no longer rolls a second time to check for resist, so a landed Scorch now reliably stacks the vulnerability instead of sometimes fizzling on its own effect.
A 24 September change had already made Fire friendlier to level with. Wake of Fire's buff window grew from 20 to 30 seconds, because Blizzard said Mages needed too much time restoring mana between pulls to get real use out of the shorter window. Ignite also stopped double dipping on percentage damage bonuses that week.

Arcane Blast still carries the burst
Arcane Blast has not moved since the BlizzCon build: a base 54 Arcane damage hit that stacks up to 4 times over 8 seconds, each stack adding 10% damage to your other spells while raising Arcane Blast's own mana cost by 175%. Missile Barrage still gives Arcane Blast a 40% chance, and Fireball, Frostbolt, or Frostfire Bolt a 20% chance, to fire your next Arcane Missiles for free every half second.
The clearest quality-of-life fix for Arcane Mages landed on 24 September: Arcane Missiles now checks line of sight once, at the start of the channel, instead of on every missile. A target stepping behind a rock mid-channel no longer cancels the cast, which matters more while a quest mob is circling you than it ever did against a stationary target dummy.
Frost keeps its freeze, loses some of its slow
Winter's Chill boosts crit chance only on Ice Lance and Frostbolt, not every Frost spell in the tree, and as of 1 October it no longer rolls a second time to see if the debuff resists, since the spell that triggers it already had to land.
Fingers of Frost gives a 15% chance per point to treat your next cast as if the target were frozen, so two points buy 30% uptime into Ice Lance. Frostbite still freezes on a chill proc, and Ice Lance still deals 300% more damage to a frozen target than an unfrozen one. The change players keep flagging is Improved Blizzard: its chill rises from 15% at one point to 40% at three, always for 1.5 seconds, a lighter slow than the talent carried in Classic Era, so landing an actual freeze leans harder on Frost Nova and Frostbolt than on the storm itself.
How to build a wow forever mage for leveling right now
Frost is the leveling build Method.gg's and Mobalytics' current guides both point to, since its freezes and Frost Nova make solo pulls safer than fighting without them. This is the order Mobalytics lists for the beta's level 30 cap:
If you would rather burst than kite, the Missile Barrage loop plus Presence of Mind still works for an Arcane mage build at the level 30 cap. Gnome's Eureka racial pairs well with either spec by cutting the cost of your next 3 casts, while Orc, Troll, and Undead cover the Horde side depending on whether you want more spell power, more cast speed, or extra sustain.
Across this many mage rewrites in one beta, the fix that would save the most time is a single current build instead of five guides that disagree. The Wowdee add-on will keep one mage leveling build per spec and flag it whenever the beta renames, retunes, or moves a talent you already picked.
- 5 points in Improved Frostbolt for a faster cast.
- 2 points in Frostbite for a chance to freeze on a chill proc.
- 3 points in Ice Shards, then 3 in Piercing Ice.
- 1 point in Ice Lance and 1 in Improved Blizzard.
- Loop back for the last 2 points in Ice Shards, then 3 in Shatter.
- At level 30, take Fingers of Frost.
Still to come
Not yet settled by our sources or tested in game:
- Whether Heating Up's 3-stack, 20-second window holds past the level 30 beta cap.
- The full level 60 Arcane and Fire talent rows beyond what the beta has shown so far.
- Whether Improved Blizzard's weaker slow gets tuned again before launch.
- A confirmed best mage leveling build past level 30, once the beta cap moves.
