When the Legacy system opens

WoW: Forever's Legacy System is account-wide progress built from three parts: Legacy Challenges, Legacy Perks, and Legacy Rewards. You complete challenges to earn points, spend points in perk trees on one character at a time, and watch leftover points fill a cosmetic reward track. Alts are encouraged, not required. Blizzard says every character advantage in the system can be unlocked on a single character.

  1. Reach level 25 on a character, or 150 skill in a non-gathering primary profession, or explore the entire world map on one character.
  2. Open the Legacy panel from the shield icon on the menu, or press Y, the default hotkey.
  3. Complete Legacy Challenges to earn points across six categories.
  4. Spend up to 16 points per character in the Professions, Adventure, and Resourcefulness trees.

65 Legacy Challenges, a 16-point spend cap

There are 65 Legacy Challenges, each worth one point, in six categories. Classes pay 27: each class at level 25, 45, and 60. Tradeskills pay 18: each non-gathering primary profession at 150, 225, and 300 skill. PvP pays 12: ranks 3, 7, 10, 13, and 14, Exalted with each battleground reputation, and weeks 4, 7, and 10 of the Field of Honor season's journey.

Adventure pays 2: the full world map on one character, and the Lord Valthalak dungeon set questline. Dungeons pay 3, one for the final boss of every dungeon in the 15 to 25, 26 to 45, and 46 to 60 level bands. Raids pay 3: Onyxia, all 13 Hyjal Summit bosses, and all 8 Barrow Deeps bosses.

Those 65 points sit on your Battle.net account, open to every character that is not Hardcore. Each character spends them independently in Professions, Adventure, and Resourcefulness, up to 16 points at launch. Points earned past 16 still count, up to 65, toward the Legacy Reward Track, a cosmetic line that adds no power. Four items are confirmed there at launch: the Replica Ironforge Air Rifle, the Spectral Bear Cub, the Spectral Bear Tabard, and the Reins of the Spectral Bear.

How many Legacy points can one character earn?

A single character can earn 3 points from leveling, up to 6 from tradeskills, 12 from PvP, 2 from Adventure, and 6 from dungeons and raids combined. That is 29, well past the 16-point cap, so you do not need a second character to reach it.

Blizzard built the cap for two reasons. A new player should not be staring at a finished account, and you should not feel forced to level every class before your main feels complete. The team has also said the system is built to grow: new Legacy Challenges and Perks with every content update, and eventually expanded spending caps and new trees beyond Professions, Adventure, and Resourcefulness.

What the beta is testing, and what is still unclear

On 1 October 2026, Blizzard said a future beta week would grant every tester 16 Legacy points, kept until the beta ends, so people can try the perk trees without farming every challenge first. As of 4 October, testers were still asking when that grant would land. It is a test. It is not how you earn points at launch.

A week earlier, the 24 September 2026 beta build (a separate update from the one announcing the 16-point grant) had already cut the cost to respec class talents to 1 silver, a temporary discount that climbs after your first reset and drops back after an hour. That is a different system from a Legacy respec. Players report Legacy respecs still cost 10 gold on the current beta client and have asked Blizzard to confirm whether that is intended; there was no blue reply as of 5 October 2026. Do not plan gold around a player report.

The Wowdee add-on + app will compare a main-only Legacy plan against an alt plan before you spend your 16, so you can see which trade-offs fit how you actually play.

Still to come

Not yet settled by our sources or tested in game:

  • The exact Legacy respec cost at launch (beta testers report 10 gold; Blizzard has not confirmed it).
  • Which Legacy Challenges are active in the current beta versus the full launch list.
  • The point totals in the Legacy Reward Track that unlock each of the four confirmed items.
