What changes for engineering in WoW: Forever

Engineering stays a primary crafting profession, turning metal bars, stone and gems from Mining into bombs, grenades, guns, ammunition, scopes and goggles, plus utility gear such as a Target Dummy that taunts nearby enemies or a Parachute Cloak that slows a fall (Icy Veins, 29 September 2026).

Training still runs through four ranks with skill and level gates: Apprentice to 75 skill with no requirement, Journeyman to 150 (50 skill and character level 10), Expert to 225 (125 skill and level 20), and Artisan to 300 (200 skill and level 35) (Icy Veins).

One real change from Classic: several gadgets now scale with your current engineering skill, so the same device is weaker at 250 skill than at 300. A new Tinkerbox also lets an engineer slot one personal tinker onto their own belt, such as a short teleport or a burst of Nitro Boost speed, and it needs reapplying every three uses (Icy Veins).

Engineering's goggles and its Repair Bot: the profession's two camp-ready staples in WoW: Forever.

The Reagent Bot, Repair Bot and Anarchist's Workbench

Engineering's camp buff is unusual. It is one of only two professions, with Cooking, whose camp objects skip the normal stat buff and hand out a service instead (Icy Veins; Warcraft Tavern, Camping Objects & Buffs guide).

Placing a higher tier over a lower one at the same fire ignores the normal cooldown, so upgrading your own camp never means a wasted wait (Warcraft Tavern, Camping Objects & Buffs guide).

  1. Reagent Bot (skill 20): learned free from the Camping 101: Engineering quest in your starting zone, or from any engineering trainer. Lets players near the fire buy reagents.
  2. Repair Bot (skill 140): needs Blueprint: Repair Bot and the Arclight Spanner tool. Lets players buy reagents, sell items and repair gear, and replaces a Reagent Bot placed at the same fire.
  3. Anarchist's Workbench (skill 300): needs its own blueprint and the Arclight Spanner. Adds the workstation some higher-skill schematics require to craft.

How do WoW Forever engineering goggles work?

Goggles stay engineering's signature headgear, and Forever adds a way to chase specific ones without relying on random drops. Craftsman's Writs are crafting-order quests pulled from Sealed Writs that drop around the world; turning one in for an engineering item such as Shadow Goggles, Fire Goggles or Catseye Ultra Goggles pays reputation with the Azeroth Commerce Authority or Durotar Supply and Logistics, scaled by writ rank: Journeyman 75, Expert 125, Artisan 200 (Zockify, 29 September 2026).

The 1 October beta notes list no engineering-specific change, so the camp bots, trainer gates and writ list above reflect the most current build (Blizzard, Beta Development Notes, updated 1 October 2026).

Specializations and the engineering Legacy path

At 200 engineering skill you still pick Goblin or Gnomish Engineering through a quest chain. Switching later means unlearning and releveling the whole profession, so the choice is worth planning ahead (Warcraft Tavern, Engineering Overview guide).

Reaching 150, 225 and 300 engineering skill each grants one Legacy Point, and two Legacy talents support the climb: Working Overtime adds 4% per rank across five ranks, up to 20% at rank 5/5, to the chance to gain a skill point on an eligible crafting action, and Dedicated Study grants a free skill point to your lowest-skilled profession every 23 hours, or Elemental Essences once everything is maxed; beta guides disagree on the exact number (Zockify; Warcraft Tavern, Legacy Tree & Rewards in World of Warcraft Forever, 13 September 2026). At 300 engineering skill, Engineering Certification costs 1,000 Merchant's Favor and permanently unlocks the account-wide title "the Engineer", though your character still needs 300 skill of their own to display it (Zockify).

Gnome's passive Engineering Specialization racial no longer adds flat skill levels. In Forever it instead lowers how often your own gadgets backfire on you (Warcraft Tavern, Engineering Overview guide).

Wowdee's add-on + app will turn the three camp objects into a checklist for your current fire, remind you of the next Craftsman's Writ worth chasing for a goggles upgrade, and build a shopping list of the ore and parts still missing to craft it.

Still to come

Not yet settled by our sources or tested in game:

  • Whether the Spyglass-effect goggles and charge-based parachute cloak seen in the 15 September BlizzCon demo shipped to the live beta
  • The official, Blizzard-confirmed count of new Forever-only engineering schematics; beta datamining put the figure near 80 as of late September 2026, but Blizzard has not published a final number
  • Whether the Goblin/Gnomish specialization choice also requires character level 30, as one guide states, alongside the 200-skill gate
  • Any pre-launch balance pass on PvP-facing engineering items such as bombs and sappers
  • Dedicated Study's current Elemental Essence payout after all primary and secondary tradeskills are maxed.
