Who makes which potion

WoW: Forever moved the standard Healing Potion line out of Alchemy. Zockify's Alchemy guide says those potions are now crafted with First Aid, while Alchemy gets Discolored Healing Potions, which restore health but add a negative effect.

That split matters more than either potion. First Aid is a secondary profession that every character can learn alongside two primaries, so anyone can keep their own stack of standard potions. Discolored Healing Potions need an Alchemist, whether that is you or a supplier.

What the October 8 fix means

Blizzard's October 8 beta notes say damage from Discolored Healing Potions no longer breaks crowd-control effects. The note confirms the drawback deals damage, and that this damage no longer ends an effect that would normally break when you're hit.

In practice: if the drawback is still hurting you when a breakable effect such as a polymorph or a sap lands, the potion's damage no longer frees you. Plan your escapes around class tools, not the potion.

Which to carry

For a character without Alchemy, the answer is already simple: carry the First Aid potions you can make yourself. For an Alchemist the trade isn't settled. The sources read here give no healing amounts for either family and don't say whether they share a cooldown, so there's no evidence yet that a Discolored potion heals enough more to justify its drawback.

Until those numbers are public, keep standard potions as your no-drawback default and treat Discolored ones as extras for moments when a little extra damage won't matter.

Still to come

Not yet settled by our sources or tested in game:

  • Official healing amounts and drawback size for each rank of both potion lines.
  • Whether standard and Discolored potions share a potion cooldown.
  • Whether the Alchemist's Stone, which Zockify says increases the effect of healing potions, also boosts Discolored ones.
