What's official
Forever is adding item effects that care where you are. Blizzard's Deep Dive recap says new effects “tie item choices to specific environments, such as Woodlands, Mountains, or Deserts.” The words “such as” matter: those three are examples, not a confirmed complete list. Blizzard calls them environments; biome is the shorthand players use.
The recap doesn't name an item with one of these effects, say how strong the effects are, or explain how the game decides which environment you're standing in.

The first named examples in beta data
Blizzard Watch's 21 September list of new beta Enchanting recipes shows what such effects can look like. Molten Heart of the Mountain raises Attack Power for 15 seconds, with the effect doubled in Volcanic areas, and Frozen Heart of the Mountain raises Frost and Shadow spell damage for 15 seconds, doubled in Snowy areas.
Volcanic and Snowy aren't among Blizzard's three examples, which backs up reading “such as” literally. Both trinkets come from a beta list that Blizzard Watch says can change before launch, and neither entry says which zones count.
Why scenery won't tell you
Many of Azeroth's zones mix terrain: a forest opens onto hills, a mountain zone holds valleys and lakes. Whatever decides an environment bonus, it will be game data rather than how a place looks, and that data hasn't been published. A guess from the scenery is most likely to be wrong at the borders, which is exactly where you might be fighting when it matters.
Indoor areas, dungeons and raids add another open question. Nothing official says whether an environment effect follows you inside.
Planning before the map exists
You can still make sensible calls with an environment item in your bags:
- Judge it on base stats first, so you know what it costs you everywhere the bonus doesn't apply.
- Don't vendor it straight away. Its value depends on where you level next, and that may be exactly the environment it names.
- When you cross between zones or step indoors, watch the item's tooltip and your buffs for any sign the effect switches on or off, and don't assume it's active until you see that it is.
Still to come
Not yet settled by our sources or tested in game:
- The full list of environment types; beta Enchanting data already names Volcanic and Snowy areas beside Blizzard's three examples.
- Which zones and subzones belong to each environment, and how borders are handled.
- Whether environment effects apply indoors, in dungeons and in raids.
- Other items with environment effects, where the two Heart of the Mountain recipes come from, and whether their numbers survive the beta.
