What changed for warlock talents in WoW: Forever
WoW: Forever keeps the three classic Warlock trees, Affliction, Demonology, and Destruction, but reworks a long list of talents and baseline spells. The current beta is capped at level 30, so testers have seen most of the early and middle rows but not the final level 60 talents.
The biggest system change touches all three trees at once: damage over time effects can now critically strike. That makes crit rating and talents such as Pandemic matter far more than they did in original Classic, where DoTs never crit.
Several mandatory or purely passive Classic talents were cut to make room for build choices, including Improved Drain Soul and Fel Intellect. Other classes have seen similar trims during the same beta, so this fits a wider pattern of Blizzard clearing out dead talent points across the game.

Bane of Agony and Bane of Doom: no longer Curses
Curse of Agony and Curse of Doom are renamed Bane of Agony and Bane of Doom, and Blizzard moved them out of the Curse category entirely. You can now run Bane of Agony or Bane of Doom at the same time as a raid debuff such as Curse of the Elements or Curse of Recklessness, something original Classic never allowed.
Improved Bane of Agony increases Bane of Agony's damage by 5% per rank, and Pandemic raises the critical strike damage bonus on Bane of Agony, Bane of Doom, Corruption, Drain Soul, Drain Life, Siphon Life, and Wrack by up to 100% at three ranks.
A tester posting on the official forums on 23 September 2026 reported that Bane of Agony felt cheaper to cast than the Classic version and that its damage ramps up the longer it runs (player report, not yet confirmed with official numbers). The same thread describes Curse of Recklessness getting a bigger armor reduction without the old attack power penalty, though Blizzard has not published a final tooltip for it.
Soul shards move into a reagent bag slot
Soul Shards are now flagged as a Reagent item, so Forever's new reagent bag slot holds them separately from your normal inventory. Icy Veins' Forever class guide, updated 2 October 2026, notes shards still do not stack, but keeping them out of your main bags frees up real space compared to original Classic.
Drain Soul can generate a Soul Shard when an enemy dies while you are channeling, so you no longer need to land the final hit yourself.
Shards still fuel the class's core kit: summoning demons, Create Healthstone, Create Soulstone, Ritual of Summoning, and Shadowburn. Stocking up before a dungeon or raid pull is still worth doing.
How demons scale with your gear in Forever
Demons now scale with the Warlock's stats and gear instead of mostly standing still while your character outgrows them. Fel Vitality adds to the health and mana of the Imp, Voidwalker, Succubus, Incubus, and Felhunter, and Demonic Knowledge adds spell damage and healing while a demon is summoned.
Demonic Pact, the Demonology capstone, lets you sacrifice one demon and summon another right away while keeping the Demonic Sacrifice bonus; Blizzard showed it in its 6 October Class Highlights video. Mobalytics' copy of the beta tooltip adds that bringing back the demon you sacrificed still cancels the bonus.
Blizzard's own known issues list, updated 1 October 2026, confirms the scaling exists even though the character sheet does not show it correctly yet: warlock pets do not display mana as a resource or mention the scaling from their master, and pet health scaling from Stamina is also missing from the panel. Treat the exact numbers you see on a demon's frame as incomplete until that is fixed.
Pet balance is still moving. Testers on Icy Veins and the official forums both describe the Succubus and Incubus outperforming the Imp for damage, and the Voidwalker generating enough threat to compete with an actual tank.
What is still being tuned
The 1 October beta patch renamed the Affliction talent Soul Harvesting to Soul Harvest and fixed it to correctly grant its mana regeneration bonus, a sign Blizzard is still adjusting the drain talents. The same patch made Hellfire able to critically strike and fixed Drain Soul so it properly interrupts when you start casting something else.
None of the three trees have been tested at level 60 with full talent points, finished gear, or raid encounters, since the beta cap is level 30. Expect more changes to coefficients, mana costs, and rank counts before launch.
Wowdee's class guides will track which Warlock talent and spell changes carry over from the beta to launch day, so you are not planning a build around a patch note that already changed.
Still to come
Not yet settled by our sources or tested in game:
- Final level 60 talent point totals and damage or mana coefficients for all three trees.
- Confirmed tooltip numbers for Bane of Agony's mana cost and damage ramp, and for the reworked Curse of Recklessness.
- The exact demon scaling formula once the character sheet correctly shows pet mana, health, and hit numbers.
- Whether PvP-specific numbers change further before launch, since beta battlegrounds are not yet running.
