Where is Wailing Caverns in WoW: Forever?

Wailing Caverns sits in The Barrens, inside a skull-shaped cave mouth by Lushwater Oasis, southwest of the Crossroads. You walk down through a cave system before you reach the actual instance portal; the outdoor skull entrance is not the dungeon itself.

Horde players have the short trip, straight across The Barrens from the Crossroads or Ratchet. Alliance players either sail from Booty Bay or cut south from Ashenvale through Astranaar, which takes longer.

Forever guides put the dungeon's level range at 15 to 24 (Icy Veins) or 17 to 24 (Warcraft Tavern). Both agree that most groups start picking up Wailing Caverns quests in the low teens and finish the dungeon around level 24.

Wailing Caverns quests in WoW: Forever

Seven quests are tied to the dungeon. Five are open to both factions: Deviate Hides and Deviate Eradication from Nalpak and Ebru near the entrance, Trouble at the Docks and Smart Drinks from Ratchet, and The Glowing Shard, which starts from an item Mutanus the Devourer drops. Serpentbloom and Leaders of the Fang are Horde-only, picked up in Thunder Bluff.

Leaders of the Fang asks you to loot four gems off the four Fang leaders inside the dungeon. A Reddit player report worried this quest line, and its opener The Forgotten Pools, had been cut from Forever. As of 4 October 2026 both are still in the game, just gated behind a five-quest prerequisite chain.

  1. Pick up The Forgotten Pools from Tonga Runetotem in the Crossroads
  2. Investigate the Stagnant Oasis and collect the Altered Snapjaw Shells
  3. Return to Hamuul Runetotem to unlock Nara Wildmane's quest
  4. Pick up Leaders of the Fang from Nara Wildmane in Thunder Bluff
  5. Loot the four gems from the Fang leaders inside Wailing Caverns

Wailing Caverns bosses and loot

Nine bosses can appear: Lady Anacondra, Lord Cobrahn, Lord Pythas, Lord Serpentis, Kresh, Skum, Verdan the Everliving, Mutanus the Devourer, and the rare Deviate Faerie Dragon. The four Druid of the Fang leaders share Sleep, Lightning Bolt and Healing Touch, so save interrupts and crowd control for their Sleep cast.

Mutanus only appears after the four Fang leaders are dead. You then talk to the Disciple of Naralex near the entrance to start an escort. He fights through two waves of adds before Mutanus shows up on the third, with an AoE fear, a sleep, and a melee Thundercrack worth standing out of.

Boss drops run from item level 21 to 25 and lean leather and mail: Serpent's Shoulders and Belt of the Fang off Lady Anacondra, Leggings of the Fang and Cobrahn's Grasp off Lord Cobrahn, Armor of the Fang off Lord Pythas, Venomstrike and Footpads of the Fang off Lord Serpentis, and the Deep Fathom Ring and Mutant Scale Breastplate off Mutanus.

The Embrace of the Viper set and its serpent Cat Form

Wailing Caverns still drops the Embrace of the Viper leather set. Wowhead's Forever item database lists five pieces: Armor of the Fang, Belt of the Fang, Leggings of the Fang, Footpads of the Fang, and Gloves of the Fang. That fifth piece drops from Druid of the Fang trash, not one of the four named leaders, and loot trackers like Zockify had not logged it by 4 October 2026. Forever beta testers reported on 19 September 2026 that wearing all five pieces also changes a Druid's Cat Form into a serpent, a purely visual swap, not a new specialization or ability set.

The reported bonuses are plus 10 Intellect at two pieces and plus 10 Attack Power at three. At four pieces, taking damage while at or below 25 percent health restores 100 health and mana over five seconds, with a five-minute cooldown. Five pieces add Dream Venom, a chance for melee hits to stun the target for one second. Developer Zirene, a WoW Forever designer, said on X that the serpent's color changes by Druid race and that Prowl makes it slink to the ground and slither.

Wowdee will turn this into a Wailing Caverns checklist: the seven quests sorted by giver, which Fang leaders you still need for Leaders of the Fang, and which Embrace of the Viper pieces you are missing, tracked against your current level.

Still to come

Not yet settled by our sources or tested in game:

  • Whether the serpent Cat Form appearance also triggers from the set worn as transmog, or only from the five pieces equipped as real armor.
  • A Blizzard forum blue post or patch note confirming the Embrace of the Viper change; so far only a WoW Forever designer's reply on X (19 September 2026) and fansite reporting confirm it.
