How to get to Hall of Thanes

Hall of Thanes is one of WoW: Forever's nine new dungeons, tucked beneath Ironforge in a long-sealed section of the city called Old Ironforge. Blizzard named it in the 12 September What's Next panel, and the 1 October beta notes already listed it among the dungeons players can enter, alongside the Deadmines and Shadowfang Keep.

Icy Veins puts the dungeon at level 13-18. IGN sets the floor lower: level 10 to enter, 15 or higher recommended for a group, and confirms you do not need a quest to walk in, just the level and a group. It recommends a full group of five: one tank, one healer, three damage dealers.

Getting there favors the Alliance, since Ironforge is theirs. Method.gg describes the long road a Horde party would need instead, through the Undercity, Silverpine Forest, Hillsbrad Foothills, Arathi Highlands, Wetlands, and Loch Modan into Dun Morogh, and says it has not found a quest or teleporter that shortens the trip. Whether a Horde group can enter the instance itself once they reach the door is unconfirmed. Treat Horde access as unsettled until Blizzard says otherwise.

  1. From Ironforge, head to the Great Forge, then go southwest into the throne room.
  2. At the throne room entrance, take the left passage.
  3. Follow the passage down to the bottom of Old Ironforge.
  4. The entrance and its meeting stone are at the end, past the stairs.

The four bosses, in order

Every beta tracker that has run the dungeon agrees on the same four bosses, in the same order. Faldrim Anvilmar comes first, an undead dwarf who patrols Anvilmar's Rest and casts an interruptible Mind Blast alongside Anvilmar's Curse, an attack-speed debuff. Magmatus follows, a fire elemental backed by a Dark Iron Summoner, whose Fire Nova punishes anyone who stays bunched up near him.

Plunder patrols the hallway after that. Beta guides describe him as an elemental guardian with a knockback. IGN also reports an occasional charge that briefly stuns a player, so clear nearby trash before pulling. Durgen Dirgehammer closes the run: the dwarf behind the Dark Iron incursion inside, flanked by two Stone Golems, with an area fear and a Rend bleed that stacks on the tank.

The quests, and what sources still disagree on

Five quests are tied to the dungeon. Three can be picked up outside it: Old Ironforge Incursion from Earthseer Farsen in Dun Morogh, The Restless Dead from Afadra Dunwall above the entrance, and Important Heirlooms from Thom Filch by the bridge. Two start inside: An Ancient Grudge from a Ghostly Attendant just past the entrance, and The Treaty of Understanding, which begins from a tablet behind the vault door in the final room.

Which of those five a Horde character can pick up is not settled. Zockify counts all five as Alliance-only. Icy Veins puts only three as Alliance-only, which would leave two open to both factions, but does not say which two. Method.gg names Important Heirlooms and An Ancient Grudge as the two, then contradicts its own list elsewhere on the same page. Until a source gets its own story straight, treat the faction split as pending.

One change is settled: the 1 October beta notes cut dungeon quest experience, Hall of Thanes included, by half beyond each quest's normal reward. A run still pays, just less than it did the week before.

Wowdee will check which of the Hall of Thanes' five quests your character is still missing, flag the two that start inside the dungeon, and confirm your group has a tank and healer before you head down.

Still to come

Not yet settled by our sources or tested in game:

  • Whether Horde players can enter the Hall of Thanes instance itself once they make the long walk Method.gg describes, and whether a shorter route or teleport exists.
  • Which two of the five quests, if any, are open to Horde; trackers name different pairs.
  • Whether quest rewards change again before launch, after the 1 October dungeon XP cut.
