Clear the gauge at the gate: WoW: Forever checks your gear before you walk in.

Does WoW Forever run on a Mac?

Yes. Forever ships with native Mac support built around Apple Silicon. The published minimum is macOS 12 on an Apple M2 or a 9th-generation Intel Core (Coffee Lake) chip, 8 GB of RAM, and the same 128 GB of free SSD space as Windows.

The recommended Mac configuration is macOS 15 on an Apple M4 with 16 GB of RAM. If you are still on an M1 Mac or an older Intel model, you sit below that minimum line. Players on Blizzard's own forums have reported Mac-specific beta issues, including a Mac restarting entirely at a high graphics quality setting on an M4 iMac, so treat any Mac crash as worth reporting rather than assuming it is only a driver problem on your end.

The GPU cutoff Forever added

Forever's new renderer blocks older graphics cards outright, not as a mere performance warning. Blizzard requires a GPU built on AMD Graphics Core Next 1 (2012), NVIDIA Maxwell (2014), Intel Skylake (2015), or a newer architecture, because the updated visual look depends on a feature called RGBA16F UAV support in compute shaders that first arrived with those generations.

A bigger model number does not guarantee you clear that line. Blizzard's own examples: a GeForce GTX 750 Ti or Intel HD Graphics 530 counts as compatible but still sits below the minimum performance target, while a GTX 760, 770, 780, or a Radeon HD 6950 is blocked outright even though some of those were flagship cards in their day. Check your exact GPU under Device Manager, Display adapters (or Settings, System, Display, Advanced display) before assuming a higher number means you are safe.

Is there WoW Forever Steam Deck support?

Not officially. Blizzard has not listed SteamOS or Steam Deck among supported platforms, and its published requirements cover only Windows and Mac. What Forever does add, confirmed by Blizzard, is native controller support with its own Gamepad UI, already live in the beta and covered in full in our controller support guide.

Players on Blizzard's official forums report Forever running well on Steam Deck through Linux compatibility layers once that Gamepad UI is turned on, often pairing it with a small Bluetooth keyboard for chat and typing. Other player reports describe frame-rate drops in crowded starting zones. Treat Steam Deck as a community-tested route, not a guaranteed one; a separate forum thread is already asking Blizzard for official Linux and SteamOS support.

How to check your PC before launch day

Run through this list once, in order, and you will know where your PC or Mac stands before 4 November.

Wowdee will not touch your graphics settings or install anything for you. What it can add is a short checklist inside tonight's plan: confirm your SSD space, your GPU generation, and your RAM, so you spend your first night playing instead of troubleshooting an install error.

  1. Clear 128 GB of free space on an SSD. Forever's published requirements do not list a mechanical hard drive as supported storage.
  2. Check your GPU model in Device Manager on Windows, or under About This Mac, then compare it against the architecture cutoff above rather than just the model number.
  3. Confirm your RAM: 8 GB covers the minimum tier, 16 GB matches the recommended tier on either platform.
  4. On the 1 October beta build, Blizzard flagged the beta's own install size as larger than intended and said a future update will trim it, so leave headroom beyond 128 GB until that is fixed.
  5. If your card sits near the minimum, plan to use the Standard-Definition (SD) character models rather than HD once you are in the game; the beta also pulled the new Ray Traced Shadows option on 1 October until a bug is fixed, so do not plan around it yet.

Still to come

Not yet settled by our sources or tested in game:

  • Whether Blizzard trims the beta's install size back toward the published 128 GB figure before launch
  • A final Battle.net Shop requirements table rendered directly, rather than through secondary sites that cite it
  • Whether Ray Traced Shadows returns with different hardware requirements once Blizzard fixes it
  • Any official Blizzard statement on Steam Deck or SteamOS, as opposed to player reports that it works unofficially
