Gamepad support is in, and still Alpha
WoW: Forever ships with official gamepad support. Blizzard named it on the What's Next panel on 12 September 2026, right next to the graphics and character-model options. In the beta you turn it on under Gamepad (Alpha), in Options.
A few classes get their own flyouts: shapeshift forms for druids, pet control for hunters and warlocks, auras for paladins, stances for warriors. A compact-bar option shows only the action set you are using. Fixed party targeting, outside raids, lets you pin each party member to one directional-pad button instead of cycling through the group.
As of the 1 October notes, the gamepad's own button layout is fixed. Rebinding from that screen changes your keyboard and mouse bindings instead, not the controller.

How to turn on the gamepad UI
You can enable it before you even log in, or from inside the game.
Some beta menus still want a mouse click, so keep one within reach even with a controller turned on.
- At the login or character-select screen: press Menu, open Options, then the Gamepad (Alpha) tab under System.
- In-game: press Escape, open Options, then Gamepad (Alpha) under Gameplay.
- Tick Enable Gamepad UI (Alpha). Your keyboard and mouse keep working once it is on.
What the controller UI can and can't do
Hold the right shoulder button and an aiming circle appears under your feet, so the right stick targets an enemy. The face buttons mark the target, pull back your last hostile target, or assist whatever your current target is attacking. Hold the left shoulder button for the same against friends: the directional pad steps left, right, up and down through your party or raid frames, and a face button targets yourself or your pet.
Action bars come in four sets of eight, reached by holding one or both triggers, for 32 slots split across pages. Four face buttons are fixed to jump, cancel, interact, and open the menu. Everything else is yours to fill. You can bind a spell from the spellbook or an item from your bags without touching a mouse: open the radial menu, pick the spell, and press the bar button where you want it to land. There is no controller-only way yet to clear a slot; that still needs a mouse.
The layout reset to plan around
Beta notes from 24 September fixed a bug where your edit-mode layout would not show up at all while the gamepad UI was on. A different issue took its place. As of the 1 October known issues list, switching to or from the Gamepad UI resets your active edit-mode layout back to the default preset, and it is not fixed yet.
Treat it as a UI inconvenience, not a lost layout. Set your bars back up after you flip modes, and give yourself a few minutes for it.
Wowdee's journal lets you pin yourself a note, like a reminder to rebuild your bars the next time you switch into Gamepad UI, so you are not relearning the layout from memory.
Still to come
Not yet settled by our sources or tested in game:
- Whether the edit-mode layout reset survives into a build closer to launch.
- A full button-binding map once the Gamepad (Alpha) label comes off.
- Whether Steam Deck or other handhelds get official support; nothing from Blizzard confirms it yet.
