How does survival hunter play in WoW: Forever?

Survival hunter in WoW: Forever is a melee specialization. It no longer plays like the secondary, trap-and-utility tree Survival was in Classic. The current beta builds a full close-range rotation around Raptor Strike and Mongoose Bite, while you keep a pet, traps and a ranged weapon as backup. Blizzard's class deep dive for Hunter confirms the shift, pairing new melee talents such as Predator's Edge and Strider Kick with a trap kit that now works in combat.

The Hunter's structural limits still apply. Ranged shots turn off inside the 8 yard dead zone around an enemy, so Survival leans into that gap instead of fighting around it. Traps can now be used in combat, with their cooldown raised to 30 seconds, and Frost-based and Fire-based traps now run on separate cooldowns from each other. Aspect of the Beast, kept up for melee, also grants melee Attack Power on top of its usual bonus.

  1. Mark the target with Hunter's Mark before you engage.
  2. Send your pet in first and let it build threat.
  3. Open at range with Serpent Sting and Auto Shot while the pet closes the gap.
  4. Move into melee and use Raptor Strike, then Mongoose Bite whenever it is active.
  5. Use Disengage if you pull threat off the pet.

Dual-wield or two-hander: the melee weapon choice

Survival's melee weapon choice is open, not fixed. You can dual-wield two one-handed weapons or carry a single two-hander, and the current beta does not give either a clean edge. The talent Predator's Edge adds extra off-hand weapon damage on top of its melee critical bonus, which rewards dual-wield for the extra swings. A two-hander still hits harder per swing, and Raptor Strike and other melee abilities scale off weapon damage, so a slower, harder-hitting weapon can match a faster pair.

Mobalytics' beta guide puts it plainly: even with Predator's Edge talented, a two-hander can still out-damage a dual-wield pairing, and the right call depends on the specific items in front of you. Icy Veins ranks weapon damage as Survival's top stat priority, ahead of Agility, so compare items by that first.

Survival hunter talents in the current beta

The current beta's Survival tree (patch 1.60.1) centers on a handful of redesigned talents. Savage Strikes now adds 2 or 4 percent to all melee damage per rank, instead of only buffing Raptor Strike and Mongoose Bite. Predator's Edge raises melee critical damage and off-hand damage together. Expose Prey gives your attacks on a Hunter's Mark target a chance to activate Mongoose Bite outside of a dodge, which used to be the only trigger.

Lacerating Strikes, the 31 point talent, adds a bleed to Mongoose Bite worth 40 percent of the hit over 21 seconds. Strider Kick, the new 21 point talent, is an instant weapon-damage kick that also grants 30 percent movement speed for 3 seconds. Counterattack, now a 16 point talent, still triggers off a parry and immobilizes the target for 5 seconds on top of its weapon damage.

For the level 30 beta cap, Icy Veins recommends Savage Strikes, a full 5 points in Predator's Edge, then Strider Kick, since most of Survival's strongest talents sit past that point. A recent beta build also adjusted Deflection's parry bonus down to 1/2/3/4/5 percent per rank, from 2/4/6/8/10 percent.

Traps and tracking still matter in melee

Traps and tracking stay part of the melee kit. Entrapment now immobilizes a target every time a trap triggers, rather than on a chance, and Clever Traps extends Freezing Trap and Frost Trap duration while boosting Immolation and Explosive Trap damage. Improved Tracking merges the old Monster Slaying and Humanoid Slaying talents into one talent that boosts damage against whatever creature type you are currently tracking, so switching Track Beasts, Track Humanoids or Track Undead to match the zone still matters. Resourcefulness, a new talent, cuts the mana cost of traps and melee abilities and gives crits a chance at mana regeneration while casting, which keeps a melee Hunter from running dry mid-fight.

A Survival Hunter build shifts almost every beta patch right now: talent ranks move rows, percentages change, and new talents like Strider Kick or Resourcefulness show up mid-season. Wowdee's class guides will track your current Survival Hunter talent picks against the newest Forever patch notes and flag what moved since you last respecced.

Still to come

Not yet settled by our sources or tested in game:

  • Level 60 Survival Hunter performance once the beta level cap rises past 30
  • Final numbers for talents still being tuned mid-beta, such as Deflection's parry scaling
  • Confirmed dual-wield vs two-hander weapon comparisons once full itemization lands
