Which buffs only reach your party?

WoW: Forever keeps the original rule from Classic and The Burning Crusade: many class buffs only reach the five players in the caster's own party. Shaman totems like Windfury and Grace of Air work that way, and so do Battle Shout, Trueshot Aura and the Druid's Leader of the Pack and Moonkin Aura. Wrath of the Lich King later made buffs like these raid-wide. Forever has not.

Buffs you cast on a player, such as Power Word: Fortitude, Arcane Intellect and Mark of the Wild, still reach anyone you target. The pressure comes from the auras, shouts and totems.

Shaman totems got stricter on the 24 September 2026 beta build. Windfury, Grace of Air and Tranquil Air Totem no longer stack, even when two different Shaman in the same party drop them, and Flametongue Totem no longer stacks with Windfury. One air totem covers one party, so a second Shaman in that party adds nothing to it.

One totem, one party. The group next door gets nothing from it.

How party buffs lock 17 of 20 raid slots

A buff that only reaches five players has to be copied into every party that wants it. Hyjal Summit, the 20-player raid opening on 9 December, splits into four parties, so a raid that wants Windfury and Leader of the Pack in both melee groups needs a Shaman and a Feral Druid in each one.

On 5 October, wowforever.be published a spec table, credited to Wowhead, for a 20-player raid that covers every buff in every group. With party-only buffs it fills 17 of the 20 slots, including two Feral Druids, two Enhancement Shaman, a Balance Druid and an Elemental Shaman. With the same buffs raid-wide, it needs 12.

Treat both numbers as one planning model, not a rule. The table assumes a raid chasing every buff, and it counts some Burning Crusade talents, like Improved Sanctity Aura, that Forever has not confirmed. The squeeze itself is familiar from The Burning Crusade, when many raids took five Shaman. It hits pickup groups hardest, where a leader can spend longer in Trade chat hunting one spec than raiding.

Will Blizzard make party buffs raid-wide?

Maybe, for some of them. On episode 2 of The WoW: Forever Podcast, posted 1 October 2026 with designers Kris Zierhut, Aidan Moon and Josh Greenfield, the team discussed making Leader of the Pack and Moonkin Aura raid-wide, so raids would not need four Shaman and four Druids. A summary written from the episode's captions marks it as an idea only.

No beta build has made any party buff raid-wide as of 6 October, and Blizzard has not said whether anything changes before the 4 November launch or the 9 December raid unlock. Windfury is the buff most players will watch: Warriors play differently without it, with less damage and fewer actions per minute.

Building a 20-player raid around party buffs

Until Blizzard decides, plan a Hyjal Summit night party by party instead of filling 20 slots and sorting them later.

Wowdee's raid prep will lay out the four parties for a Hyjal Summit night and flag a party with two air totems or no Shaman at all, so the swaps happen before the first pull, not after a wipe.

  1. Put each melee group in the same party as the Shaman whose air totem it needs.
  2. Give each party one air totem only. Since the 24 September build, a second Shaman in the same party adds nothing to it.
  3. Put physical damage dealers with the Feral Druid and spellcasters with the Balance Druid.
  4. Leave targeted buffs like Fortitude, Arcane Intellect and Mark of the Wild for last, since one caster can cover the whole raid.

Still to come

Not yet settled by our sources or tested in game:

  • Whether Blizzard makes Leader of the Pack, Moonkin Aura or any other party buff raid-wide.
  • An official Blizzard list of party-only and raid-wide buffs in Forever.
  • What the dungeons and raids podcast episode says about raid composition.
