Is leveling faster than Classic?

The underlying Classic XP curve is retained, but that does not establish identical leveling speed on every build. Reward tuning, routes and party conditions affect how quickly a character earns that XP.

On the 24 September WoW Forever Podcast, senior game designer Josh Greenfield and lead Classic designer Tim Jones said beta players were averaging 20.5 hours to reach level 20, against 20.4 hours in Classic era. Those early-beta averages were similar. They predate both October reward patches and cannot measure the current build.

That number only covers levels 1 through 20, from a beta where most players were still exploring rather than racing. Nobody has a comparable number yet for the run to 60.

Early-beta level 1–20 averages were similar; later reward changes need fresh measurements.

What changed in dungeon and mob XP

Earlier beta tuning reduced dungeon kill XP and increased dungeon quest rewards. On 8 October, Blizzard raised dungeon creature-kill XP by approximately 20% compared with the previous build and restored per-player lower-level-enemy XP calculation in mixed-level groups. The separate restriction on vastly overleveled party members remains.

On 1 October 2026, beta notes cut that dungeon quest bonus. 'Dungeon quests now reward 50% less extra experience beyond normal quest values,' the notes said, tying the change to feedback that leveling, through dungeons especially, felt too fast.

That cut is to the bonus only, not the whole reward. PC Gamer tracked Wailing Caverns' Deviate Hides quest: 1,600 XP in Classic, about 4,650 XP in the beta before the patch, and about 3,100 XP after it. The quest is still worth almost double its Classic value.

Open-world kills changed too. A 5 October player analysis on r/classicwow, reported by Icy Veins, found lower-level enemies give 4 to 20 percent less experience than they do in Classic, while same-level kills match Classic exactly. WoW Forever senior game designer Aidan Moon called the gap intentional, meant to offset the extra experience players now get from food buffs and Camping's rested bonus.

Pick up the dungeon quests before setting out. Repeat clears can earn worthwhile XP, finish an incomplete quest or help the group find loot. Blizzard still wants outdoor adventuring to matter; the patch is not proof that endless dungeon grinding is fastest.

Rested XP, camping, and the Well Rested talent

Forever ties a rest bonus to the new Camping system instead of only to logging out at an inn. Sit at a Basic Campfire and, once you are rested, you pick up the camp's buffs. The 1 October beta notes reworked the icon and tooltip on the resulting Boosted Rest debuff to make it clearer, and stopped campfires from damaging characters under level 5.

The Legacy system touches rested XP too. Blizzard's 13 September deep dive named an Adventure-tree talent, Well Rested, that raises how much rested experience you gain and raises the rested cap, aimed at players leveling alts.

Camping's full object list and exact buff numbers are not published yet.

More than 1,000 new quests, fewer dead zones

Blizzard's BlizzCon recap counted more than a thousand new quests across the level 1 to 60 journey, most of them aimed at the zones and level ranges that ran thin in original Classic.

Riverglades alone carries more than 150 new quests, aimed roughly at the mid-30s to mid-40s range, one of Classic's longest dry stretches. Zephras Isle is a new 1-to-12 starting zone built for the Skyborne race, in an elemental, sky-bound style.

Forever also keeps flying mounts and level scaling out of the game. A zone you outlevel stays exactly as it was, and nothing shortens the ground you still have to cross to reach it.

Tips to level well

None of this changes the basics much. The habits that worked in Classic still work here, with a few new wrinkles.

The Wowdee add-on + app will turn this into a route: the quests and dungeon chains still open for your level, in the order that wastes the least time getting between them.

  1. Pick up every quest in a hub before you start killing. The extra quests make backtracking slower than pushing ahead.
  2. Run with your dungeon quests collected, then judge another clear by unfinished quests, XP, needed loot and the time it would take.
  3. Keep gear and consumables current. Fights are built around an ordinary creature taking 10 to 15 seconds to kill solo, so being undergeared stretches every pull.
  4. Do not plan a route around a respawn complaint from last week's forum post. Blizzard raised respawns across five zones on 1 October, with more targeted adjustments elsewhere.
  5. Treat beta leveling-speed data as dated evidence. The 1 October quest-bonus cut and 8 October kill-XP buff changed different rewards; current routes need fresh measurements.

Still to come

Not yet settled by our sources or tested in game:

  • The exact rested XP value Camping objects and the Well Rested Legacy talent grant.
  • Whether the 1 October dungeon-quest XP cut is the final number before the 4 November launch.
  • Level ranges for Mount Hyjal and Shen'dralas, which sit outside the beta's tested 1-30 band.
  • Whether Horde's early dungeon options lag Alliance's now that Hall of Thanes and Ruins of Lordaeron are both open early.
  • Whether Blizzard keeps the 4 to 20 percent low-level mob XP cut, or adjusts it again before launch.
