What Leatherworking makes in Forever
Leatherworking turns hides, leather, and scales, mostly gathered through Skinning, into leather and mail armor. It also makes armor kits, a permanent upgrade applied to a chest, leg, hand, or foot piece. A Light Armor Kit adds Stamina and Armor, a Forceful Medium Armor Kit adds Attack Power and Armor, and a Mystic Medium Armor Kit adds Spell Power and Armor instead.
Past armor, Leatherworkers make bracer kits that grant Spell Power, Attack Power, or Stamina to the crafter, a custom saddle that can raise mounted speed by up to 5%, and quivers and ammo pouches that speed up a Hunter's ranged attacks. Forever also adds new Leatherworking bags, including reagent bags, alongside the cloth bags Tailoring already makes.

How to level Leatherworking
Leatherworking has four trainable ranks: Apprentice (skill cap 75, no requirement), Journeyman (150, needs skill 50 and character level 10), Expert (225, needs skill 125 and level 20), and Artisan (300, needs skill 200 and level 35). Trainers for each rank sit in every major city, plus a few starting zones such as Goldshire, Teldrassil, and Zephras Isle.
Skinning is the usual second profession. It supplies the leather, hides, and scales that most Leatherworking patterns ask for, so leveling the two together means fewer trips to the auction house. Druids, Hunters, Rogues, and Shamans get the most immediate use from what Leatherworking makes, since they can wear most of its leather and mail output as they level.
The Camp Tent and its camp objects
Leatherworking's three campfire objects sit inside the camp system every profession feeds. A Camp Tent, placed at skill 20, lets players resting nearby build Rested experience up to 5% of a level, with no effect if they already have more. A Tanning Rack, placed later, lets the camp craft certain Leatherworking reagents and keeps the Camp Tent's rested bonus. A Sewing Machine, the last of the three, unlocks recipes that need one and also keeps that rested bonus. Blizzard's own deep dive confirms the Tanning Rack is required for more advanced Leatherworking recipes, without naming which ones.
Rested experience matters while leveling, and loses its point at Forever's level cap. On 24 September, a player on the official forums called the Camp Tent close to useless once a character is capped, since there is no more experience left to speed up. A camp aiming at max-level players is better served by a Tanning Rack or Sewing Machine instead. Both still carry the rested buff and add a crafting station the fire would not otherwise have.
Specializations, writs, and Legacy Points
At higher skill, Leatherworkers can choose Dragonscale, Elemental, or Tribal Leatherworking, each unlocking recipes unique to that school. Forever carries all three over from Classic, where they required level 40 and skill 225. Whether Forever keeps those exact numbers has not been confirmed yet.
Crafting orders called Craftsman's Writs can ask for Leatherworking items, such as a leather tunic or a quiver, and pay reputation with the Azeroth Commerce Authority or Durotar Supply and Logistics on turn-in. Reaching 150, 225, and 300 Leatherworking skill each pays a Legacy Point, the same rule every non-gathering crafting profession follows.
The Wowdee add-on will build a shopping list of the Leatherworking kits, saddle, and bags your character can craft next, so a trainer visit is not needed to find out what is already in reach.
Still to come
Not yet settled by our sources or tested in game:
- Blizzard's own skill numbers for placing the Tanning Rack and Sewing Machine; only third-party guides have published them so far.
- Which recipes actually require the Tanning Rack, since the deep dive does not name them.
- Whether Dragonscale, Elemental, and Tribal Leatherworking keep Classic's level 40 and skill 225 gates in Forever.
- A settled count of new Leatherworking recipes, once it replaces the beta figures fan sites are currently reporting.
