What a Temporary Economy Hold is
A Temporary Economy Hold is a new restriction Blizzard can put on a WoW: Forever account it suspects of real money trading, which covers both selling gold and receiving illicit gold. Community manager Kaivax announced it on the official forums on 13 October 2026, after some players had already run into it.
While the hold is in place, your use of four things is restricted: trading with other players, the mailbox, guild banks and the auction house. Blizzard's aim is to stop suspicious gold before it is passed on or spent into the economy, and to give its team time to investigate properly.

How a hold ends
There are two outcomes. If the investigation finds the activity that triggered the hold was legitimate, the hold is removed automatically. If it finds the account was involved in real money trading, Blizzard takes action against the account.
A hold alone leaves no permanent strike. Blizzard says it will only count against you if the account is later proven to have been involved in real money trading. Kaivax also warns that the system is new and that false positives may happen while it is being tuned.
Blizzard has not said what exactly triggers a hold or how long an investigation takes.
Why Blizzard is doing this in Forever
Forever has been built with gold buying in its sights from the start. In the 17 September developer Q&A, senior game designer Josh Greenfield said the team had been "too lenient" with gold buyers and would now "very aggressively punish" them. Forever also bans GDKP raids, which Blizzard has tied to the flow of bought gold.
The hold is the next step: stop the gold first, then decide. Blizzard says these systems will also be deployed to all versions of World of Warcraft if they prove successful in Forever.
How to stay clear of one
Playing normally is the main protection: Blizzard says a player who is just playing the game is unlikely to ever see the restriction.
- Never buy gold, boosts or items for real money from anyone but Blizzard.
- Be wary of large, unexplained gold from strangers by trade or mail. Blizzard says receiving illicit gold can trigger a hold too.
- If a hold appears on your account, wait for the review. Blizzard says it lifts on its own when the activity is found to be legitimate.
Still to come
Not yet settled by our sources or tested in game:
- What activity triggers a hold. Blizzard has not published the signals it uses.
- How long an investigation usually takes before a hold is lifted.
- Whether and when Blizzard brings the system to other versions of World of Warcraft.
