Does City of Dalaran need an attunement?

On the Horde side, yes. Horde characters work through a quest chain that starts in Tarren Mill before anyone hands them the Dalaran Sewer Key. Alliance characters reach the same key in two steps: a short errand to the Image of Archmage Modera beside Lordamere Lake, then the dungeon quest she gives out with the key attached.

City of Dalaran is the levels 28 to 33 dungeon in the Alterac Mountains. It is still closed in the public beta, and Blizzard's Josh Greenfield said on 1 October that it arrives in a future beta update. The Horde chain can already be finished up to the door, which is how Wowhead and a 5 October video by Farmerfarms mapped it.

The quest data comes from beta client build 1.60.1. Names, counts and rewards can still change before the 4 November launch.

Horde attunement: the Tarren Mill quests

Everything starts with two Forsaken in Tarren Mill, in Hillsbrad Foothills: Magus Wordeen Voidglare and Keeper Bel'varil. Most of the work happens west of Hillsbrad, at the Lordamere Internment Camp and in the ruined outskirts outside Dalaran's dome. Wowhead lists the quests at levels 32 to 35.

  1. Prison Break In, from Voidglare: recover the Bloodstone Wedge, Marble, Shard and Oval from four Forsaken thieves held at the Lordamere Internment Camp.
  2. Key to the City, from Voidglare: search the Dalaran camps for the Grimy Key. Wowhead lists it as loot from a Warden's Footlocker.
  3. Stone Tokens, from Bel'varil: bring 10 Worn Stone Tokens. Any Dalaran citizen can carry one, and the quest text points you to the internment camp as the safer place to hunt.
  4. Dalaran Patrols, from Voidglare once Prison Break In is done: kill 6 Dalaran Summoners and 12 Elemental Slaves in the ruined outskirts outside the dome.
  5. Bracers of Binding, from Bel'varil once Stone Tokens is done: bring 4 Bracers of Earth Binding from the elementals in the Dalaran ruins.
  6. Blood in the Streets, from Voidglare: take the Grimy Key to the sewers on the city's northern edge, along Lordamere Lake, and report to the Image of Archmage Modera.
  7. Heart of Disruption, from Modera's image: she imbues your key, which becomes the Dalaran Sewer Key. Collect the Arcane Mote inside the dungeon and bring it back to Voidglare.

Which Horde quests are actually required?

Blood in the Streets is the gate. Its own text points back to two earlier steps: the key you found at the internment camp, from Key to the City, and the patrols you thinned, from Dalaran Patrols. Prison Break In comes first because Dalaran Patrols follows it.

Stone Tokens and Bracers of Binding sit in Wowhead's attunement chain, but no quest page lists them as a requirement for Blood in the Streets. They are short and in the same area, so doing all five in one trip costs little until someone confirms which ones you can skip.

The four Tarren Mill quests give 425 Undercity reputation between them. Heart of Disruption pays out a choice of Battle Spaulders, Enchanted Sandals or a Striking Staff once you bring the Arcane Mote out of the dungeon.

Alliance: the key from Archmage Modera

Alliance players skip the outdoor chain. An Alarming Request, from Emissary Jacques, sends you to the Image of Archmage Modera beside Lordamere Lake. Her Heart of Disruption quest comes with the Dalaran Sewer Key already provided and asks for the same Arcane Mote from inside the dungeon.

The Alliance version rewards Spellguard Pauldrons, Renewing Footpads or Defender of Dalaran, plus 100 Kirin Tor reputation. Some guides treat An Alarming Request as required and others as an optional lead-in, and where Jacques stands is not listed yet.

Wowdee's dungeon prep will show who in your group already holds the Dalaran Sewer Key and which Tarren Mill quests are still open, so the group finds out before the walk to Lordamere Lake, not at the gate.

Still to come

Not yet settled by our sources or tested in game:

  • Whether one Dalaran Sewer Key holder can open the way in for the whole group.
  • Whether Stone Tokens and Bracers of Binding are required before Blood in the Streets.
  • Where Emissary Jacques stands, and whether Alliance must do An Alarming Request first.
  • Which beta build opens City of Dalaran.
