What a player reports
WoW: Forever runs busy zones as several parallel layers. A player on Blizzard's forums describes being moved to another layer while still using their camping items and sleeping bag, and arriving, in their words, on a fresh plot of dirt in the middle of nowhere. The camp did not come with them.
Their requests show what the game didn't do. They asked Blizzard to block layering while a placed item exists, to move the items with the player, or at least to refund the cooldown when someone is layered within the first minute. Each request points to the same behaviour: the objects stay where they were placed, and the cooldown keeps running.

Why the first minute hurts most
Blizzard's Deep Dive recap says each player can add one object to a camp, and those objects share a one-hour cooldown. You also have to sit by the fire for a moment before the buffs apply; Zockify's Cooking guide puts that at one minute of sitting or crafting nearby.
A layer change inside that minute can cost you the full hour without giving you the buff, which is why the player asked specifically for a first-minute refund.
What has and hasn't changed
The October 1 beta notes did touch camping, with a clearer Boosted Rest debuff, 'mutually exclusive' wording on camp features and less campfire damage, but nothing about layers. The October 8 notes read for this guide mention no change to camp persistence, layering or cooldown refunds either.
No confirmed way to follow your camp back to its layer has been published, so this guide doesn't suggest one. Until Blizzard says otherwise, treat a placed object as spent for the hour the moment it lands, and expect a layer move to cost you the camp rather than bring it along.
Still to come
Not yet settled by our sources or tested in game:
- Whether grouping with the player who lit the fire keeps you on the camp's layer.
- Whether objects you placed keep working for players who stay on the original layer.
- Whether Blizzard will refund the cooldown, block layer moves while an object is out, or move objects with their owner, as the player asked.
