What changed for Blacksmithing in Forever
Blacksmithing keeps its Classic job in WoW: Forever. You still turn ore and bars into weapons, shields, and mail or plate armor. Mining stays the usual second profession, since most plans want the bars and stone that Mining supplies.
Beta data lists more than 200 new Blacksmithing plans, and many Classic plans have changed skill requirements or skill-up ranges, so an Era leveling route will miss some Forever breakpoints. The beta client still includes Armorsmith and Weaponsmith, but Blizzard has not said whether they remain for launch.
Reaching 150, 225, and 300 Blacksmithing skill each pays one Legacy Point, part of the 18 points Blizzard sets aside for non-gathering primary professions account-wide. In the beta, Blacksmithing Certification is a 300-skill purchase for 1,000 Merchant's Favor that permanently unlocks the account-wide "the Blacksmith" title; only a character with 300 skill can display it.

What does the camp forge chain do?
Blacksmithing was one of Blizzard's own examples for the new camp object chain. At skill 20 you can place a Sharpening Wheel at any campfire, taught by a camping NPC or a trainer. The Anvil and Master Forge need more than skill: Blizzard's deep dive says both come from Blueprint recipes that drop off specific dungeon bosses, and beta guides give 140 and 300 as the skill needed to use those blueprints once you have them. Each later object keeps the Sharpening Wheel's buff and adds a crafting station that some recipes require.
Sources do not agree on what that buff is. Blizzard's own recap calls it an Attack Power buff. The beta client's tooltip and a guide reading that tooltip both call it Strength instead, exclusive with the shaman's Strength of Earth Totem. Either reading agrees it is a class-buff variant, so it does nothing for a group that already has that buff covered.
How Craftsman's Writs work for Blacksmiths
A Sealed Writ drops off enemies around the world. Opening one hands you a random Craftsman's Writ of that rank, things like Craftsman's Writ: Pearl-Handled Dagger or Craftsman's Writ: Rough Bronze Leggings. You do not have to craft the item yourself. Writs are transferable, so buying the piece on the auction house and handing in both the item and the writ works the same.
A turn-in rewards reputation with the Azeroth Commerce Authority on Alliance or Durotar Supply and Logistics on Horde: 75 at Journeyman rank, 125 at Expert, and 200 at Artisan.
- Obtain a Sealed Writ of the rank you want.
- Open it for a random Craftsman's Writ, such as a Pearl-Handled Dagger order.
- Obtain the item it asks for; you do not have to craft it yourself.
- Hand in the item and the writ at the marked NPC for reputation.
Where new Blacksmithing plans come from
Beta datamining names two Merchant's Favor vendors who sell Blacksmithing plans outright: Stondry Darkhammer for the Alliance and Gor'mak for the Horde. You pay in Favor earned from filling Waylaid Crates, no reputation needed, and the plans bind on pickup.
Some additional plans come from dungeons. Blizzard’s Deep Dive promised advanced Blueprint recipes from dungeon bosses, and its 1 October 2026 patch note says a number of Blacksmithing and Leatherworking recipes intended as random dungeon drops are now available. The note does not name the plans or drop rates.
The Wowdee add-on + app will show which Craftsman's Writ you can already fill from what is in your bags, and flag when buying the item beats crafting it yourself.
Still to come
Not yet settled by our sources or tested in game:
- Whether the Sharpening Wheel's camp buff is Attack Power, as Blizzard's recap says, or Strength, as the beta tooltip and a guide reading it both say.
- Whether the Classic Armorsmith and Weaponsmith specializations stay active for launch.
- Which specific plans the 1 October dungeon blueprint drops cover, and their drop rates.
- Which dungeon bosses drop the Blueprint recipes for the Blacksmithing Anvil and Master Forge camp objects.
- Whether the early-beta Craftsman's Writ bugs (mismatched levels, missing turn-in markers) are still present.
