Are arenas coming to WoW: Forever?
None had been announced as of 15 October. Blizzard has not announced Arena or rated battlegrounds for Forever, and on that day's official podcast the developers said they would be very wary of adding rated, razor-thin competition to a game this close to Classic.
They stopped short of a permanent no. Around 23:33 a developer said that does not mean there will never be any competitive experience, only that the team wants to stay with large, objective-driven battles for a while. Blizzard's 7 October progression article fits that picture: it is built on Honor, Rank Points, the familiar ranks and seasonal tasks, and describes no rating ladder.

Why Blizzard wants PvP to stay free-form
A guest set this up around 17:07: some of Forever's most interesting PvP tools were never designed as PvP tools, such as a trinket that turns you into a spider, alongside consumables and profession items. From around 18:12 the developers agreed that itemization is meant to open room for emergent tactics, and said the open world is where that whole toolbox gets used.
They also want the overlap the original game had: earning battleground reputation for items that help in raids, or carrying a raid weapon into a battleground. In that spirit they want PvP to feel loose, with few imposed rules, and battlegrounds to be fun before they feel like a grind.
The trouble with porting Burning Crusade arenas
Around 20:52, the developers explained why lifting arenas from Burning Crusade or Wrath of the Lich King clashes with that aim. Those systems came with their own currency and gear whose stats mattered mostly in that mode, which walls PvP players off from everyone else.
Balance was the second concern. The original game was not tuned around two- or three-player matches; it was built for teams of 10 or 15 using their whole kits to take and defend objectives. Rated small-team play, they said, tends to distort how people judge classes and abilities.
Dedicated effort should still pay off. The same answer said Rank 14 armor should look outstanding, as a reflection of the work it takes.
What competitive players can plan around
The stated focus is new battlegrounds with fresh game types and locations, alongside large outdoor battles. Darkspear Islands, Forever's new battleground, is the current example. One developer's wish for a king-of-the-hill fight inside Blackrock Mountain was offered as a personal dream, not a plan.
Duels remain the outlet for small, skill-on-skill fights. When a guest asked at 24:11 for a dueling area, the reply was a cautious no-promises answer, and the episode later revealed a Hyjal dueling map for a community tournament; our dueling arena article covers what that does and does not mean.
For a long-term goal today, the rank ladder is the published path: Honor for gear, Rank Points for advancement, and Rank 14 at the top.
Still to come
Not yet settled by our sources or tested in game:
- Whether any rated or other competitive format is planned after launch; on 15 October none was announced and none was permanently ruled out.
- Which battleground types and locations follow Darkspear Islands.
