What changed for rogue talents in WoW: Forever

Blizzard rebuilt all three rogue trees for WoW: Forever rather than just retuning numbers. Combat kept most of its Classic shape. Assassination now leans harder into poison damage through its new Venom finisher, and Subtlety adds a sustained-damage thread built around Rupture and Hemorrhage alongside its usual burst openers.

One change applies no matter which tree you pick. Combo points no longer drop when you switch targets, as long as you have not already started building new combo points on someone else, according to Mobalytics' rogue overview (16 September 2026, updated 18 September). Icy Veins' rogue guide (20 September 2026) also notes that Energy itself now regenerates as a steady stream rather than the old tick-based pulse from Classic Era, which should make the rotation feel a little smoother even before talents come into it.

Rogues can use axes in WoW: Forever

Yes. WoW: Forever gives rogues one-handed axe skill for the first time, something the class never had in Classic Era. Combat's reworked Hack and Slash talent replaces the old separate Sword, Mace, Dagger, and Fist Weapon Specialization talents with one talent that reads your equipped weapon: axes and swords get a small chance at an extra attack, daggers and fist weapons add crit chance, and maces ignore a slice of target armor, per Mobalytics' rogue class changes guide (16 September 2026).

Orc's Axe Specialization racial, previously dead weight for a class that could not use axes, now grants 1% crit with an axe equipped, according to Icy Veins' rogue class guide (20 September 2026). A player report on the official beta forums (22 September 2026) says Combat is the only spec that gets real use out of the new axes so far, so do not plan an Assassination or Subtlety build around one yet.

When do rogues unlock poisons in WoW: Forever?

Poisons open up at level 20, according to Method.gg's Forever rogue leveling guide. Instant Poison is the only one worth keeping active while leveling. Deadly Poison hits harder over longer fights but rarely matters before max level, and the rest stay PvP tools.

Assassination's new capstone talent, Venom, is built entirely around poisons. It is a finishing move that increases poison damage by 30% and your chance to apply poisons by 10%, lasting longer the more combo points you spend (9 to 21 seconds across 1 to 5 points), per Mobalytics' rogue changes guide. Player reports on the beta forums (22 September 2026) flag that Venom also costs Energy and combo points on top of Slice and Dice's own upkeep, and question whether Classic-era Energy regeneration can support both.

New rogue talents to know

Thousand Cuts, Subtlety's new talent, reduces the Energy cost of your next Hemorrhage or Backstab by 3 whenever Rupture deals periodic damage, stacking up to five times, per Mobalytics. Flawless Execution, Combat's replacement for the Restless Blades mechanic Blizzard had shown earlier in the beta cycle, simply cuts Eviscerate's Energy cost by 10; player reports on the beta forums (22 September 2026) say Restless Blades disappeared without an official explanation. Subtlety also adds Dirty Tricks and an upgraded Improved Distract for quieter crowd-control play.

Blizzard's own development notes confirm smaller, official rogue fixes rather than talent reworks: Sap now correctly flags you for PvP (24 September 2026 notes), Expose Armor no longer wipes your combo points on a miss, Setup only grants a combo point from the target you actually dodged or resisted, and Rogue gained Cooldown Manager support in the 1 October build.

What rogue players are reporting in the beta

None of this is finished. Player reports from the 28 September build describe several quieter nerfs stacking up across all three trees: Opportunity's damage bonus cut from 20% to 10%, melee hit chance reduced to 3% (was 5%), the dedicated Weapon Skill talent removed outright, and Lethality's crit damage bonus cut from 30% to 20%.

Two more points keep coming up in player reports from the forums and Reddit (22 to 28 September 2026). A new 2-point Legacy perk called High Alert adds roughly +2 to other players' Stealth detection, which rogues feel more than most classes. And Thistle Tea, rogue's signature instant 100-Energy refill, can now be used by Feral druids too, which long-time rogue players have called out as diluting one of the class's defining consumables.

Keep in mind the beta level cap only reached 30 on 1 October, per Blizzard's own patch notes. It launched capped at 20, according to player reports, so most rogues have barely touched the back half of their trees yet. Expect more changes before launch.

A starting rogue build for leveling in WoW: Forever

If you just want a working build while the beta keeps shifting, Method.gg's Forever leveling guide lays out a simple path for either tree.

The Wowdee add-on + app will keep a rogue class guide tuned to whatever the current Forever beta build actually does, flagging what changed since your last respec instead of leaving you to work from outdated Classic Era notes.

  1. Combat build: put early points into Remorseless Attacks, then train Dual Wield and Slice and Dice at level 10.
  2. Assassination build: prioritize Relentless Strikes, Ruthlessness, and Improved Slice and Dice for a steadier resource economy.
  3. At level 18, pick up Ambush if you are carrying a dagger.
  4. At level 20, train Instant Poison and keep it applied while you level.
  5. Past level 30, Combat aims for Dual Wield Specialization and Blade Flurry, while Assassination aims for Mutilate, Seal Fate, and Venom.

Still to come

Not yet settled by our sources or tested in game:

  • Whether Mutilate keeps a strict dagger requirement at launch; sources disagree and nothing official has confirmed it yet.
  • Final Energy regeneration numbers, and whether any spec gets a dedicated Energy-return talent before launch.
  • How Thousand Cuts performs once raid-level Rupture uptime is testable past the current level 30 beta cap.
  • Whether Subtlety gets a mobility tool like Shadowstep before launch, a frequent player request Blizzard has not addressed.
