Does your weapon matter in Bear and Cat Form?
Yes, and more than it used to. Blizzard's Hunter and Druid deep dive, published 30 September 2026, says your melee auto attack DPS in Bear Form, Cat Form, and Dire Bear Form now matches the DPS of your equipped weapon. In past versions of the game, your form used a fixed damage value and mostly ignored what you had equipped. In WoW: Forever, your staff, mace, or polearm's DPS rating is exactly what you hit for, and abilities that deal weapon damage, like Primal Bite, use that same number.
The swing timer is fixed by form at either 1.0 or 2.5 seconds. Blizzard has not said which form gets which number, so do not assume Cat Form is the fast one just because that is how the original game worked. Icy Veins' Feral Druid guide, updated 4 October 2026, spells out the practical result either way: since your attack speed is locked to your form, your weapon's own speed stat has no effect on your DPS. Only its DPS rating counts.
One wrinkle: the 1 October 2026 beta notes made every Shapeshift Form immune to Disarm. But if a rogue or warrior disarms you before you shift, that penalty carries into the form anyway and lasts its full duration, so shifting is not an escape from a Disarm you already have.

Procs, enchants, and consumables now work in form
Weapon enchants and procs stay active while you are shapeshifted. Blizzard names weightstones, the Crusader enchant, and Windfury Totem as working examples, so a proc-heavy weapon is worth carrying into Bear or Cat Form rather than saving it for caster gear. Every potion works in form too, including rage potions and Thistletea.
The exception is Engineering bombs. Most still cannot be thrown while shapeshifted, though two new recipes, SAF-T and EZ-Thro, are built to work in form. Which bombs those cover beyond that has not been detailed yet.
Racial abilities also work without leaving form now, including Shadowmeld, War Stomp, and Walk on Air. Most doors and objects can be opened in form as well, so you do not need to shift back just to open a door or pull a lever.
Gearing a bear: what Thick Hide changes
The Feral talent Thick Hide now converts Defense skill from your gear and buffs into Armor while you are in Bear Form, Cat Form, Dire Bear Form, or Moonkin Form, with shapeshift-specific multipliers increasing it further. Icy Veins' current beta data has the talent's tooltip reading 1 additional base Armor per level, plus 0.67 Armor for every point of Defense skill beyond five times your level. A Defense cloak or ring is no longer a dead slot for a bear tank, but you do need to spend talent points in Thick Hide to get the benefit; it is not automatic.
The Wowdee add-on will compare the weapon in your hands with the one in your bags, including its proc and its DPS rating, before you shift form.
Still to come
Not yet settled by our sources or tested in game:
- Which form uses the 1.0 second swing, and which uses 2.5.
- The exact list of Engineering bombs that work in form beyond SAF-T and EZ-Thro.
- Whether Thick Hide's Defense-to-Armor conversion changes again before launch.
