What Book Return actually asks for

Book Return is an optional quest from Marshal Dughan in Goldshire, picked up during the Fargodeep Mine chapter of the reworked Elwynn Forest leveling path. Wowhead's Forever database lists it as a level 6 Elite quest: find six Lost Books and the Picture Book: Fun with Elementals, then bring everything back to Dughan in the Book Bag he hands you when you accept.

The quest text explains why. Brother Paxton, who runs the library at Northshire Abbey, is missing books, and he is especially worried about Fun with Elementals, since he thinks even a kobold could use it to summon an elemental servant. The same text adds a plain warning: the depths of the mine are fairly dangerous, and you should bring friends.

Dee stands on a wooden platform in the upper level of a kobold mine, reading a picture book, while kobolds fill the lower tunnel below.
The book and Nimsy are on the upper platform. The lower tunnel, full of kobolds, is the wrong floor.

Where is the book in Fargodeep Mine?

Fargodeep Mine has two levels. Players who finished the quest say Fun with Elementals and the NPC holding it, Nimsy, a level 6 Elite Apprentice Geosculptor, are on the upper level, not the lower tunnel most players search first. One Reddit reply put it plainly: the mine has two levels, it is with Nimsy on the upper one, and he is surrounded by mobs that keep spawning more.

  1. Accept Book Return from Marshal Dughan in Goldshire.
  2. Enter Fargodeep Mine and head for the upper level, not the lower tunnel.
  3. Fight through to Nimsy and defeat him for Fun with Elementals.
  4. Collect the six Lost Books scattered through the mine along the way.
  5. Return to Marshal Dughan in Goldshire to turn in the quest.

What the 24 September notes changed

The 24 September 2026 beta notes made two separate changes here. Nimsy now respawns more quickly, so a missed kill or a contested tag costs less time. Separately, the developers called Jasperlode Mine and Fargodeep Mine a little more deadly than intended for solo players and eased that by removing the kobolds' candles, joking that they do not anticipate any fallout from the theft.

The same notes fixed a duplicate-item bug. Book Return now properly removes the extra Book Bag from your inventory when you complete the quest. If you finished it on an earlier beta build and still have a spare Book Bag sitting in your bags, that was the bug those notes patched. One still showing up after 24 September is worth reporting.

Getting ready for the mine

Elite quests at level 6 are not built to solo. Older forum complaints about Fargodeep's kobolds respawning on top of players, including one player who killed Nimsy only to watch him respawn two seconds later, describe the pre-patch mine. The September notes targeted exactly that problem, but the quest is still flagged Elite, and the game's own text still says to bring friends. Treat that as current advice, not leftover caution.

On a human leveling route, the Wowdee add-on + app will point straight to Nimsy on Fargodeep's upper level when you pick up Book Return, skip the detour through Brother Paxton's library quests if you only want this one errand, and flag it as Elite so you know to bring help before you walk in.

Still to come

Not yet settled by our sources or tested in game:

  • Whether every member of a group can loot the Lost Books and the picture book, or only the player who tags Nimsy.
  • The exact coordinates for Nimsy's room on the upper level.
  • How much calmer the mine feels for solo players now that the September patch removed the kobolds' candles.
