Do battlegrounds have a timer in WoW: Forever?

Nobody could confirm it on 15 October. Around 44:05 a guest recalled Warsong Gulch games lasting a whole day when both teams turtled, and Alterac Valley matches that seemed to run for days, and asked whether Forever would add a limit.

Around 44:43 the developers said these stories are remembered fondly but are often not much fun in practice. One believed Alterac Valley would keep its reinforcement depletion, without being fully certain, and nobody could say whether Warsong Gulch or Arathi Basin have a hard timer. They would add one if it made sense.

The clearest statement was the principle behind it: battlegrounds should be fun, and one team should not be able to monopolize another group's time. That points toward limiting endless matches without confirming what form a limit takes.

Clever tricks versus exploits

Around 48:54 a guest asked whether a well-known Warsong Gulch graveyard jump would stay. Around 49:09 the developers said there is a fine line between creative use of game mechanics and an exploit. Knowing a map's tricks is part of the skill in the early battlegrounds, and they want strategies to feel as much like the original game as possible.

They would not promise the jump survives. It could be fixed before launch or shortly after, depending on how players use it: if a trick is abused or becomes degenerate, Blizzard will step in. This page deliberately does not describe the route.

Flag hiding is being closed off

Around 50:06 the developers were firmer. They said they are actively fixing places players can reach illegitimately to hide the flag and stall a game. Battlegrounds are not meant to be a one-and-done release; Blizzard plans to keep monitoring how they are played and to stamp out strategies it considers unacceptable.

A useful test is whether the other team can still play. A movement trick that keeps a fight going is different from reaching a spot nobody can contest. If you find a place where a flag carrier cannot be reached, treat it as a bug to report rather than a tactic to share.

Still to come

Not yet settled by our sources or tested in game:

  • Whether Warsong Gulch and Arathi Basin have a hard match timer in Forever, and how long it runs.
  • Whether Alterac Valley keeps reinforcement depletion at launch.
  • Whether the Warsong Gulch graveyard jump survives into the launch version.
