Is Molten Core in WoW: Forever at launch?

No. WoW: Forever launches on 4 November 2026 with no raids at all. The first raid tier opens on 9 December with two new raids, Barrow Deeps and Hyjal Summit, and Onyxia's Lair, the one returning raid. Molten Core is in neither group.

That's deliberate. At the What's Next panel on 12 September, Blizzard said Forever's story takes place at the beginning of World of Warcraft: "The original iconic raids that you know and love have not opened yet, and we're excited for you to rediscover them in the future." On the official podcast on 22 October, the developers said they are holding off on the older raids so that everyone starts in new territory.

A sealed stone gate in a dark mountain, with lava light seeping through its seams, a roadmap below with flags for 4 Nov, 9 Dec and Summer 2027, the marker on summer, and Dee watching from the side.
The old raids wait. The roadmap's summer 2027 box says revamped.

The revamped iconic raid on the roadmap

Blizzard's 2026–2027 roadmap puts a revamped iconic raid in its summer 2027 update, next to another new raid, two dungeons, more world content and a PvP season refresh. At the panel, a developer pointed to that box on purpose and read out its words: revamped iconic raid.

Blizzard hasn't named the raid. Summer is a season, not a date, and the roadmap's own footnote says content and timing can change.

What the developers said about Molten Core

On the 22 October episode, the host asked whether Molten Core would get new mechanics, or feel pedestrian next to the new raids. The answer was a careful dodge: Blizzard will talk about the future of Molten Core when it starts talking about the future of Molten Core.

Then another developer added: "I think it's probably pretty safe to say you're not just going to stand there and tank and spank Golemagg." A third reminded everyone that the word Blizzard used at BlizzCon was revamped.

That isn't an announcement. But it's the closest any Blizzard developer has come to naming the summer raid, and it says the revamp would change the fights, not just the look.

Will the old dungeons change too?

Not at launch. Lead Encounter Designer Michael Nuthals said the team considered changing the legacy dungeons and chose to keep them true to the original. The new dungeons were designed to look as if the 2004 team could have made them.

Another developer said the starting point was to be additive: add to what players remember rather than rework it, perhaps changing things later. A third pointed to Cataclysm, which added a lot but took something away. New quests and objectives already make some old dungeons slightly different, and the developers stressed they're just getting started.

What isn't known yet

Almost everything about a revamped Molten Core is open. Classic's Molten Core was a 40-player raid, while Blizzard now says it will keep adding 10- and 20-player raids every patch. Whether the revamp keeps 40 players is unknown, and so are its attunement, loot, and the role of fire resistance.

Wowdee's raid guides keep the Classic Molten Core strategy as a reference, and will mark what changes once Blizzard shows the revamp.

Still to come

Not yet settled by our sources or tested in game:

  • Blizzard confirming which raid the summer 2027 revamp is.
  • A date for the summer 2027 update.
  • Molten Core's raid size, attunement and loot in Forever.
